Parkland Hills
Stucco sided cottages and naturalistic high desert lawns
While a few brick cottages can be found throughout the neighborhood, most homes have feature traditional Pueblo-inspired architectural features. “The houses here are smaller than in the neighboring communities like Ridgemont,” Rutherford says. “They all have some Southwestern flavor – there are a lot of flat roofs, and just about everything is stucco-sided.” A few green front lawns are still scattered about on the tightly packed city lots, but many homeowners have opted for a more naturalistic approach. “Many yards in the neighborhood have been xeriscaped through recent years,” Rutherford explains. “Rather than keep the Kentucky bluegrass, owners started converting their lawns for a more natural feel in keeping with the high desert. And what’s interesting is that, when that happened, we started getting roadrunners again.” Prices can range from around $245,000 to $550,000 depending on square footage and number of bedrooms.Wilson Middle teaches children to grow their food
Neighborhood children begin their education at Whittier Elementary School, which Niche rates C-plus. They then proceed to Wilson Middle, which earns a C and offers students a chance to grow their own food through its Growing into the Future gardening program. Highland High, located on the north boundary of the community, scores a B.Multiple pocket parks throughout the neighborhood
Small green spaces can be found speckled throughout the community. “There are about 8 parks in the area,” Rutherford says. “Because it’s not designed on a grid pattern, there are a lot of curving, winding roads that created excess space and dead ends and such. And the developers put parks in those spaces.” The largest of these is Eunice Kalloch Park. Across Zuni Road to the north is Highland Pool, a public indoor swimming facility powered entirely by solar panels.Restaurants and grocery store options in nearby Nob Hill
The La Montanita Food Co-op in Nob Hill is the closest area supermarket, and for daily household necessities, residents can head north to Target or Walmart. There are a few restaurants along San Mateo Boulevard, including local Mexican spots like The Chancla and Quesadilla Way. However, Nob Hill is also home to trendy coffee shops and eateries like Flying Star Café and The Farmacy, a casual brunch spot on Historic U.S. Route 66.Surface streets provide access to the interstate highways and major area employers
Surface streets are the main thoroughfares residents are likely to rely on, with San Mateo Boulevard forming the neighborhood’s eastern boundary and connecting it north to Interstate 40. Gibson Boulevard is the most direct route to Kirtland Air Force Base, a major area employer, and to access Interstate 25. “There’s no real need for people to take the interstates from Parkland Hills, but the neighborhood is just about 10 minutes away from either of them,” Rutherford says. “It’s also just about 10 minutes from Albuquerque International Sunport and the New Mexico Rail Runner.”
