Lower price per square foot for homes in western Piedras Marcadas
Piedras Marcadas is a small, mostly residential enclave in western Albuquerque that sidles up to the Piedras Marcadas Canyon, part of the Petroglyph National Monument. “If you want to get the biggest bang for your buck and you’re okay with driving through west side traffic, that area is really nice,” says Chris Shain Tanner, a team lead with Keller Williams Realty and the President of the Greater Albuquerque Association of Realtors. “The price per square foot is significantly lower than most of the areas in the Northeast Heights.” The neighborhood is located about 10 miles from downtown, along Paseo Del Norte Boulevard. “It’s one of three ways to get across the river … all of which get pretty congested in the morning.”
New Traditional homes from the late 1990s with Spanish flair
Sun-washed sidewalks run through the fine gravel that fills most front yards in Piedras Marcadas. New Traditional homes built in the late 1990s make up most of the housing stock in the neighborhood. Many feature Spanish Revival accents — like tile roofs and arched doorways — and gated backyards with paved patios from which to soak up the New Mexico sun. Homes in the neighborhood fetch between $370,000 and $600,000, some part of homeowners associations with monthly fees that range from $20 to $40. “The price per square foot is great,” Tanner says. “You can get a nice house that would be significantly more if it were simply located in the Northeast Heights.”
Fast-food chains, big-box retailers and a handful of local options
Fast-food chains dominate the neighborhood’s dining options; Piedras Marcadas is home to Taco Bell, Blake’s LOTABURGER, McDonald’s, Church’s Texas Chicken and other national names. Locally owned ABQ Sweet Spot specializes in elaborately decorated cookies and cakes. Residents can also pick up various pastries, cake rolls and keto treats, as well as the bakery’s savory green chile cheddar biscuits. Most patrons at nearby Federidelfo’s Mexican Food take their meals to go. Smith’s and Walmart Neighborhood Market are located across Paseo Del Norte Boulevard from each other, while Paradise Hills Shopping Center to the east has a Target and Ross Dress for Less.
Community parks and the petroglyphs at the Piedras Marcadas Canyon
Several homes in the neighborhood face Richland Hills Park, a green space with a playground adjacent to the community elementary school. Piedras Marcadas Park is slightly south of the neighborhood, and it features a modern playground that resembles a series of atomic structures. The Piedras Marcadas Park Trail begins in the green space and leads toward Las Marcadas Park II. From there, hikers can access the Piedras Marcadas Canyon, which is part of the Petroglyph National Monument and home to roughly 400 ancient carvings. More than 2 miles of unpaved trails offer a vantage of the Sandia Mountain range beyond the cityscape of Albuquerque. “Once you get up to the mesa, it’s truly desert,” Tanner says. “It’s more usable for dirt bikes or side-by-sides. Not so much for a hike. It would be a little less scenic,” he says, comparing the western landscape to the cottonwood-covered Rio Grande Bosque or the eastern foothills.
B- and better-rated schools, and Mock Interview Day at Cibola High
Children in Piedras Marcadas may begin their education at Petroglyph Elementary School, which scores a B-plus grade from Niche. Afterward, they may enroll at B-rated James Monroe Middle School and Cibola High School, which also receives a B-plus. The high school offers dual credit courses through the University of New Mexico and New Mexico Community College. Sophomores can refine their interview skills with the help of local volunteers during the school’s annual Mock Interview Day as they prepare to enter the workforce.
Several highways connect Piedras Marcadas to eastern Albuquerque
Paseo Del Norte Boulevard, also known as New Mexico state Route 423, runs along the south side of the neighborhood, connecting it to the east side of Albuquerque. New Mexico state Route 45 travels south, where it traverses Interstate 40; the interstate continues toward downtown Albuquerque, roughly 10 miles from the neighborhood. Golf Course Road also passes through Piedras Marcadas, and it extends north into Rio Rancho. ABQ Ride bus 157 stops along the stretch of Golf Course Road located in the neighborhood before it continues through Uptown Albuquerque and toward the Kirtland Air Force Base.
