Sandia Ridge encompasses a welcoming community with amenities on all sides
“Albuquerque is the state’s biggest city, but it still has a small-town vibe,” says Sonya Avila, a local Realtor with eXp Realty and east Albuquerque native. This sentiment defines Sandia Ridge, where residents can get involved through the neighborhood association, which hosts regular events like Drinks in the Driveway and works to maintain the community. Well-ranked schools and several surrounding parks also serve the quiet neighborhood alongside Uptown, the hub for shopping on the city’s eastern side. Locals also value the suburb’s location along Interstate 40 immediately north and Albuquerque International Sundrop to the south.
Uptown shopping is nearby and restaurants are even closer
Within a mile of the neighborhood, locals can enjoy craft beer at Quarter Celtic Brewpub on San Mateo Boulevard Northeast and New Mexican at Los Cuates on Lomas Boulevard Northeast. I Scream Ice Cream, just west, is known for its long list of flavors and its collection of vintage toys and memorabilia. Residents can pick up groceries from Whole Foods next door. Uptown’s retail opportunities are located 2 miles northeast on the other side of Interstate 40. “Coronado Center is a popular mall and the city's biggest,” Avila says. “Whether it's regular shopping or Christmas shopping, you’re going to Coronado." ABQ Uptown and Winrock Town Center on the other side of Louisiana Boulevard Northeast offer dozens more shopping and dining options.
Sandia Ridge Neighborhood Association keeps residents in touch
Every Tuesday evening, residents convene while strolling through the neighborhood together. Sandia Ridge Neighborhood Association hosts the weekly catch-up and organizes several other events, including Drinks in the Driveway and Coffee in the Alleyway. Once a year, lawn chairs line a designated cul-de-sac for the Summer Block Party. Tables with potluck offerings and raffle prizes share space with an inflatable playhouse for the little ones, who cover the street with chalk doodles.
Pueblo Revivals and ranch-style homes offer a wide price range
One and two-story Pueblo Revival-style homes with warm-toned stucco exteriors fill Sandia Ridge. Ranch-style homes make up the remainder of the community, with many featuring open floorplans and horizontal frameworks, typical of prairie design. These early to late 20th-century properties have attached garages, pebbled lawns and a combination of old and new-growth trees sparse enough to enjoy views of the distant mountainside. Homebuyers can expect a price range from $215,000 to $500,000. However, larger homes can exceed $600,000 and reach up to $800,000.
Albuquerque High School prioritizes bilingual education
Albuquerque Public Schools serves the community and earns a B-plus on Niche. Avila mentions that many move to the area for its schools. Students attend Zia Elementary School, Jefferson Middle School and Albuquerque High School, all of which score an A-minus. However, School Choice allows enrollment to other schools across the district. Albuquerque High School's The Record is New Mexico's longest-running student newspaper, with monthly editions ranging from student activities to regional news. The home of the Bulldogs is also a bilingual institution, offering Honors and AP courses taught in complete Spanish. Less than a mile from the community, eCADEMY High School provides a virtual curriculum for those needing a more flexible learning structure.
Local parks and HB & Lucille Horn Family YMCA
Altura Park on Aspen Avenue Northeast features a playground and tennis courts with open green space for pick-up games. Residents can take their pups for a stroll along the trails of Workers Memorial Park directly east, which wind past a public art installation. HB & Lucille Horn Family YMCA, on the other side of Indian School Road Northeast, stays busy between the Horn Community Garden, youth sports and indoor programming, like its eSports league. The Downs Racetrack & Casino, 3 miles southeast, presents weekly horse races from late May through early September and has a casino open year round.
Short trips lead to Downtown Albuquerque and the city's international airport
Residents can hop on Interstate 40 directly north of the neighborhood. The throughway connects to Interstate 25, which leads to Downtown Albuquerque 5 miles southwest. Those catching flights out of the area also the interstates to reach Albuquerque International Sunport, 5 miles south. Residents can expect to hear some noise in the form of overhead planes. Presbyterian Kaseman Hospital is closer to home, 3 miles east. ABQ RIDE bus stops on San Mateo Boulevard link riders to greater Albuquerque.
