Small steps lead to positive change in South Los Altos
Immediately east of Albuquerque's International District, South Los Altos is a small residential neighborhood undergoing positive change. As the city and local communities push to bring new life to the district's neighborhoods, residents see the homes and streets being transformed with renovation and care. "The International District is definitely experiencing some revitalization. It wasn't always the greatest in terms of crime, but it has its upsides," says Racquel Gurule, a Realtor with Keller Williams, who's lived in Albuquerque for 25 years. "Neighborhoods like South Los Altos have some of the city's most affordable housing, plus you're near the heart of the city and awesome restaurants."

Constant renovation of midcentury homes
Narrow sidewalks run past pebbled lawns and fenced front yards, and sparse native New Mexico trees and cacti dot the landscape. Midcentury ranch-style homes and Pueblo Revival styles are most common in South Los Altos, typically selling for $200,000 to $280,000; the price depends largely on whether a property's been renovated. "The city has a first-time homebuyer program that encourages people to buy these older houses and fix them up, and in return, they'll help finance it. It really drops the mortgage," Gurule says. "There are a lot of flips happening in the area, and you're seeing more homes getting the maintenance they need."

Close to large retail chains and locally owned restaurants
Towne Park Plaza, just off Eubank Boulevard on the neighborhood's east side, houses several big-box stores such as Sam's Club, Walmart and PetSmart. It's one of several retail areas that run up the boulevard, making errands quick and easy for residents. A diverse selection of local restaurants is clustered on the south side, dotting the blocks around Central Avenue. Locals head out for Southern-style brunch at Vick's Vittles Country Kitchen, pick up tortas from La Loteria Restaurant and meet friends for ale flights and burgers at Bombs Away Beer Company.

South Los Altos is 3 miles from Expo New Mexico and the Albuquerque Fairgrounds, which host practically all city events. "If there's entertainment coming into the city, they'll probably head to the fairgrounds area," Gurule says. "The state fair is held there every year, and the Expo has professional bull riding, Monster Jam, flea markets — just a ton of stuff."
