South San Pedro is an active community within the International District
Located 7 miles east of downtown Albuquerque, South San Pedro is a diverse neighborhood that takes pride in uplifting the community. “We try to engage with everyone from all sides and spaces,” says Tawnya Mullen, a South San Pedro Neighborhood Association co-chair who has called this area home her entire life. Situated within the city’s International District, the neighborhood is close to markets and restaurants representing world cuisines and is close to Uptown shopping. Residents also value the neighborhood association, which spearheads projects like converting alleyways into backyard parks. “We are big on community building," Mullen says, "We are all neighbors at the end of the day."

Local establishments cater to a diverse locale
Small, independent eateries offering various cuisines underscore South San Pedro’s location within Albuquerque’s International District; “We have Middle Eastern, Peruvian, El Salvadoran and Vietnamese restaurants,” Mullen says. Popular spots include Coda Bakery, a Vietnamese café on San Pedro Drive and Cervantes, a laid-back Mexican spot on Gibson Boulevard. Several bodegas and international grocers like Bombay Spice and Central Mercado call the neighborhood home, and a Sprout’s Farmers Market is available a mile north. Residents can shop at locally owned shops along Central Avenue, 2 miles west, or one of several malls in Uptown, including Coronado Center, a similar distance north. “A lot of people will ride the bus or ride their bike to Uptown,” Mullen says.

A popular casino, city parks and alleyway transformations
Neighborhood green spaces like Jack and Jill Park and Wilson Park offer playgrounds and open space for pick-up games. The latter also includes an adjoining outdoor public pool. The Downs Racetrack & Casino is just north on Louisiana Boulevard. Mullen says one of the community's most exciting projects is the transformation of its 60-plus alleyways. “We’ve been converting them into parks,” she says. “Local schools have taken students on field trips to come and paint them. We want people to imagine they would have a park or walking trail right outside their back gate." A total of six have been completed, including The Way of Light Alley on Cardenas Drive.

Many housing options offer homebuyers plenty of choice
Tight, gridded streets form South San Pedro’s residential landscape. Ranch-style homes built during the mid-to-late 20th century make up less than half the housing stock. Many come with geometric designs and stucco exteriors typical of the Pueblo Revival style. These range in price from $150,000 to $315,000, depending on size and condition. Condos fill the rest of the area and tend to range in price from $80,000 to $140,000. Multifamily properties and apartment complexes cater to the neighborhood's high percentage of renters.

B-rated Highland High School has appeared in several popular television shows and movies, including “Breaking Bad” and “Daybreak.”

To the north, Central Avenue serves as the area’s main road. Interstate 40 is less than 2 miles away in the same direction, connecting the neighborhood to downtown Albuquerque in 7 miles. New Mexico VA Health Care System is directly south, on the other side of Gibson Boulevard. “Because the hospital is so close, we have a lot of veterans that live here,” Mullen says.
