In central Alabama's Alexander City, home to the 40,000-acre Lake Martin, water is a way of life. The 14,000-plus "Alex City" residents know all the best spots to swim, cast a line or sunbathe on the shore. "I was born and raised here, so I grew up on the lake," says Realtor Sam Spurlin, co-owner of RE/MAX Around the Lake. "I've always enjoyed boating with my friends and family and love the area's natural beauty." While Lake Martin is a recreational hub, Alex City's historic downtown draws shoppers and diners to locally owned boutiques and restaurants. "Downtown is beautiful," Spurlin says. "And while we don't have a lot of shopping, it has a couple of shops people love to go to."
The Alexander City 2024 Comprehensive Plan outlines the city's goals for the next 10 years, including designating areas for new housing, revitalizing the Avondale Historic District and creating a community town square downtown that would serve as a multiuse space. Alex City is the largest city in Tallapoosa County. Major employers include the Russell Medical Center and Prime Healthcare.

Fishing tournaments on Lake Martin and city events
Lake Martin is a focal point for outdoor recreation, including fishing, boating and water sports. Many residents who live on the lake have a private dock, but the Alexander City Boat Ramp offers public access. Wind Creek State Park also provides public access to the lake. Nation Tournament and the Jim Landers Memorial Tournament are among the popular annual events.
The city operates four inland parks and the public Lakewinds Golf Course. The Charles E. Bailey Senior Sportplex is a hub of recreational sports and hosts annual events Oktoberfest and Christmas in the Park. Downtown's Strand Park is one of the sites of the summer Alexander City Jazz Festival, one of the city's biggest events.
