Alexander has small-town charm with access to Buffalo and Rochester
Miles of farmland surround downtown Alexander. This Genesee County town has a population of just over 500, and locals like it that way. “People like being part of a small community,” says broker Chuck Flynn with Howard Hanna Real Estate Services, who lives in the county. “They want to know their neighbors.” Located in northeastern New York, roughly halfway between Buffalo and Rochester, Alexander offers a slow pace of life without being too far from major metropolitan areas.
Homes sit on large lots and often come with 40-plus acres
Homes in Alexander typically occupy large lots surrounded by open fields and farmland. “You can find a property with 40 or 50 acres,” Flynn says. Colonial Revivals and ranch-style homes are common and typically range in price from $100,000 to $460,000, depending on the size, age and condition. Flynn notes that with country living comes with some potential trade-offs. “Many of the properties rely on private wells as a water source,” he says. “They are expanding the public water system, which can make this area more attractive for those who didn’t grow up in rural areas.”
Essentials and comfort food available in Alexander and Attica
Alexander has a small downtown area with a fire department, churches, schools and the town hall, which is made from cobblestone. Locals can dine at J Dub’s Pizza and Subs or grab the essentials from Baldwin’s Country Store, which offers deli meat, cheese, baked goods, candy and donuts. More shopping and dining options are available about 3 miles south in Attica, where folks will find a Tops grocery store, a Dollar General and restaurants. Louie’s has a laid-back vibe and serves large portions of American fare. Nearby Attica’s Prospector Restaurant dishes up diner favorites, from omelets and breakfast sandwiches to pancakes and waffles. Batavia is 8 miles north, where there are big-box stores like Walmart Super Center, Target, The Home Depot, Tractor Supply Co. and more. In case of emergency, United Memorial Medical Center is about 9 miles north.
Amusement park, forest trails and hunting all nearby
Alexander offers a variety of outdoor activities for residents to enjoy. The Chris Martin Memorial Field of Dreams features a wooded area with trails and an open field that is often used for events, like bow shooting, pancake breakfasts and barbecues. “This is an outdoorsy area,” Flynn says. “People like to hunt, hike, fish. All those things.” In town, Ringnecks on Broadway is a family-owned game-bird hunting preserve. About 9 miles away, Genesee County Park & Forest features New York’s oldest county forest and over 430 acres of outdoor space for visitors to explore. Ten miles of trails weave through the woodlands, and an interpretive nature center that provides educational programs for children. The park also has a playground, sports facilities, sledding hills and picnic pavilions that can be rented. The Six Flags Darien Lake amusement park is about 10 miles away and is a popular destination for day trips filled with rollercoaster rides and fried food.
What’s happening at Antique Truck, Farm & Construction Show
The annual Antique Truck, Farm & Construction Show draws folks from throughout Genesee County. “People out here like their antique trucks and farm equipment,” Flynn says. The event includes a parade, antique tractor pull, slow truck race and lots of vehicles on display.
