Alexandria is a small community with a large draw
Residents of Alexandria know this small community by another name: Alex, pronounced el-lick. “If you were to ask us where we are from, we would say Alexandria. But amongst ourselves, we say Alex,” says Terri Smith, circulation assistant and local historian with the Alexandria-Monroe Public Library. The area has a slow pace of life but offers an unexpected attraction: the World’s Largest Ball of Paint. This ball started as a baseball that Michael Carmichael’s son painted when he was little. As of 2025, there are nearly 30,000 layers of paint, and visitors can come in and add more.

Dor-Tee’s Drive-In and the Alex Movie Theatre are community staples
Dor-Tee’s Drive-In is a longstanding pillar in Alexandria, serving soft-serve ice cream since 1958. Its menu also includes comfort food like sloppy joe and chicken strips. The Harrison is a newer addition to the city, opening in 2023 as part of the Golf Club of Alexandria. “It’s an upper-class place, very nice,” Smith says. Ole Lucky is a bar and grill that serves traditional American fare like burgers. After dinner, people can catch a movie at Alex Movie Theatre, a mom-and-pop cinema that shows new releases and classics alike. “It’s a pretty popular place,” Smith says. “Parking is hard in the front on the weekends.” Residents can get groceries from Horner’s Midtown Market and find fresh produce at the Alexandria Farmers and Artists Market every Friday afternoon from May to September. A Dollar General is in the area, and Walmart, Target and Lowe’s are all within a 20-mile drive.
