Aviation and Hollywood history in southeast Alhambra
Airport Tract wouldn’t exist without its namesake, the Alhambra Airport. It was built by Western Air Express in 1928 and aimed to be the city’s commercial aviation hub. However, Western moved their flights to neighboring cities a year after the site’s dedication ceremony, and the airport became private. It was soon a popular filming location for Hollywood movies, featured in “Danger Flight” and “13 Hours by Air.” Prior to World War II, it was used as a storage facility for fighter planes. Real estate developers later purchased the property in 1946 and converted it into single-family housing. Though the airport is long gone, it’s created the neighborhood as it is today. It’s become a common spot for families and others looking for sidewalks and tree-lined streets. “There’s this idea that if you raise a family here and send your kids to school here, you’ll be okay,” says Huai-Yueh Kang, a Realtor with Keller Williams. He’s local to the San Gabriel Valley and has sold several homes in Alhambra. “It’s a suburban environment, but you have convenient access to Asian restaurants and grocery stores. It’s also very safe, something people don’t typically associate with LA.”

Minimal Traditional homes in Airport Tract
Different from earlier Craftsman tracts, ranch-style homes here were built in a Minimal Traditional style, and they mostly have plain facades. Lots are usually less than a quarter acre, but backyards are sizeable with some trees. While driveways are narrow, they often end in one-car garages. Listings start at $700,000 but can reach $1.4 million with more updates. Listings aren’t too frequent, though. “People tend to stay here a long time,” Kang says. “Because of that, single-family homes are coveted and highly sought after. If a house goes on the market and it’s priced well, you’ll probably have 60 people at the open house and 20 buyers competing for the listing.”
