1920s architecture meets convenient shopping in Emery Park
Emery Park looks unchanged since its development in Alhambra's early days. Even with its urban Los Angeles County surroundings, the neighborhood's 1920s cottages, tree-lined blocks and highly rated schools still attract buyers looking for a classic suburban setting. "It's the type of place where you can buy your first house and stay for a long time because you've got convenient employers and shopping, and then great schools if that becomes your priority," says Realtor Mike Chou, leader of the Chou Team with Keller Williams Executive, who's been selling in Alhambra for over 15 years. Having shopping centers and employers like the Los Angeles County Public Works Department a few minutes away attracts plenty of first-time homebuyers to Emery Park, and the Spanish-style architecture and walkable schools invite many of them to become long-time residents.

A mix of architecture on uniform blocks and terraced streets
This residential community was developed in the 1920s, and its streetscape reflects the period. "It has uniform streets and yards that give that nice suburban tract feeling, but tract isn't the right word for the homes," says Chou. "They're similar sizes but have different styles like Spanish-style, Tudor-style and Craftsman." These varying cottages sit along the organized blocks that comprise most of the neighborhood. They can range from $900,000 to over $1.3 million. In the neighborhood's northwest corner, the streets lose their grid form and become winding terraced drives. This area's 1920s cottages, 1950s ranch-style homes and 1960s midcentury moderns overlook the city. They can cost $750,000 to over $1.3 million.

Costco and Target next to the neighborhood
Alhambra's most comprehensive shopping area is on the neighborhood's east side. First is the Costco Plaza, which has a Costco, of course, and a Target. To the south of Costco, Fremont Plaza has an Albertsons, a PetSmart and a few fast-casual eateries. There's also an ALDI to the north of Costco on West Main Street. West Main is Alhambra's central thoroughfare. On the neighborhood's north side, it's home to local restaurants like Genovese's Italian and Tops Jr., a staple Alhambra establishment since opening in 1952. This nostalgic walk-up window fast food joint specializes in pastrami sandwiches, along with burgers and casual Mexican fare. Two miles east, West Main becomes the main drag of downtown Alhambra, with even more stores and restaurants.

Emery Park is also the name of the park on the neighborhood's southeast corner. It provides a playground and a bit of shady grass. Alhambra Park, one of the city's primary recreation spaces, is no more than a mile north of many homes. The park's lawn covers a few acres and includes a pool, tennis, pickleball and basketball courts. Expansive natural areas like Elephant Hill Open Space and Ascot Hills Park offer hiking a few miles west of the neighborhood.
