Allouez's riverfront opportunities and upcoming development
Just south of Green Bay, the village of Allouez sits right between two major waterways: the Fox River and the East River. “It’s one of the only villages in the area that has water frontage,” says Green Bay local Alex Young, a Realtor with Keller Williams Commercial. Trails line the two waterways, both within walking distance of Allouez homes. Whereas other parts of the Fox River are more commercial and industrial, Allouez optimizes the natural space with scenic overlooks and fishing spots. Although the community has more green space than surrounding villages and Green Bay neighborhoods, living here isn’t just about being on the water. The well-traveled area doesn't have a central downtown, but more and more commercial development is now underway. “The village is doing a lot of development along the Webster Avenue corridor,” Young says. “It’s been a lot of single-story buildings and strip malls that they’ve been buying and leveling. Their intention is to make it into a mixed-use space.”
Riverfront trails, village parks and educational historic green spaces
The Fox River forms Allouez’s western border, lined with the Fox River Trail. Hikers and bikers can take it north to Green Bay or south to De Pere, appreciating the river views along the way. The Resch Family East River Trail lines the village’s eastern border, a popular spot for fishing. Green Isle Park includes access to the trail as well as basketball, volleyball and tennis courts, a playground, a baseball diamond and an ice rink. Measuring over 50 acres, it’s the village’s largest park. Kiwanis Park also has fishing along the East River, plus a playground and pickleball courts. “The hard part is they are landlocked because they have the rivers on both sides,” Young says, saying the twin rivers can limit the village’s growth and expansion. Heritage Hill State Historical Park highlights area history with 26 original historic structures from the Wisconsin fur trade through the War of 1812 and beyond. Historical reenactors demonstrate what life was like in the different periods. The white steeple is a popular wedding destination.
Allouez's diverse housing styles and ages found across the village
Allouez homes get newer as development moves south. Northward toward Green Bay, farmhouses and Cape Cods were built in the 1930s and ’40s. Midcentury ranch-style homes and split-levels make up the rest of the village, with condos closer to the southern side. Some riverfront homes are also available, but Young says they don’t go on the market often. Home prices typically range from $190,000 to $430,000. “Because of the different styles of homes, it can appeal to a very large demographic of people,” Young says. “Some other municipalities tend to price people out of the homes they want.”
Longstanding long American restaurants and dessert spots
As Allouez works to grow its restaurant and commercial scene, it maintains a strong lineup of longstanding local restaurants. Allouez Café is a local diner brimming with Packers memorabilia. The Village Grille serves American fare, from burgers, steak and pizza to floats and milkshakes for dessert. Nearby, Zesty’s Frozen Custard and Grill glows with pink, purple and teal on its vinyl booths and outdoor picnic tables. Most of the nearby supermarkets are next door in the village of Bellevue. Target is about 2 miles away, and Costco, Walmart and Aldi are about 3 miles away.
Fine arts and automotive programs at the local public schools
Langlade Elementary School receives a B-minus from Niche. Because it’s located in the village, many students can walk or bike to school. Washington Middle School receives a C. B-minus-rated East High School’s programs include the Fine Arts Institute and the City Stadium Automotive Program.
From village festivals and historic fairs to Packers tailgates
The AllouezFest Picnic and Car Show is a 40-year tradition in the village. Hosted in June at Green Isle Park, the festival includes a car show and competition that residents can enter, live music, vendor booths and plenty of activities for kids, like face painting and bounce houses. Also in June, the Heritage Festival at Heritage Hill features live music, food trucks and information booths and activities from local organizations. In the fall, Packers faithful can host tailgates or make the 5-mile trek across the river to Lambeau Field
Driving or taking the 78 bus to downtown Green Bay
Downtown Green Bay is about 3 miles from Allouez, just up the Fox River along Riverfront Drive. The 78 bus, offered by Green Bay Metro, stops along Webster Avenue, offering another route to the city center and throughout the village. Wisconsin Route 172 is Allouez’s only bridge across the river, linking with Lambeau Field and Green Bay Austin Straubel International Airport, about 7 miles away. HSHS St. Vincent Hospital is about 2 miles from Allouez. The Green Bay area can get significant snow, though most long-term residents are used to winter weather. Allouez sends out its plows after 3 inches of snow.
