Originating as an outgrowth of the southern Oregon lumber town of Klamath Falls, Altamont has retained a strong sense of community since its founding in 1895. In fact, Altamont is so close-knit that its residents have consistently fought off annexation by the larger Klamath Falls for over four decades. This community of just over 20,000 residents has developed a services-based economy since the “timber bust” of the 1980s, with retail, healthcare and education offering the most job opportunities. Though Altamont may be far from the regional hub of Medford and other big cities, its location among the forests, mountains and rivers of southern Oregon imbues Altamont with an outdoorsy, rural charm.
Altamont is home to a regionally competitive housing market
Altamont’s housing market ranges from manufactured properties that sell for less than $20,000 to ranch-style homes built in the early 20th century that go for as low as $88,000 to recently built Craftsman-influenced properties that fetch as much as $850,000. Homes vary in year of construction from 1920 to 2024, although a general preference for single-story residences has remained largely unchanged. This city’s streetscapes vary from rural main roads without sidewalks to residential sections with abundant foliage, large driveways and vast lawn sizes. Altamont’s median home price of $310,000 is slightly below the Klamath Falls median and more than $100,000 less than the Medford average.
