Eastern Altoona neighborhood with a commercial corridor
Bordered by Dutch Hill on the west and the Allegheny mountains on the east, the aptly named Pleasant Valley comprises a roughly two-mile stretch of relatively flat land on the eastern side of Altoona. Bob Baranik, lifelong Altoona resident and board member of Amtran, Altoona's public transportation authority, explains that Italian immigrants purchased large plots of land in Pleasant Valley for farming through the late 1800s and early 1900s. Even as more homes were built through the 20th century, few commercial developments or street facilities reached the area until the 1950s. "They used to call it 'Mud Town' because they went many years without paved roads. Even as they added more homes, they took a very long time to pave the streets," he says. "My mother-in-law would always have to wear her junky boots when she walked to school and switch into her nice shoes when she got there." Pleasant Valley has had paved roads for decades now, and today it's primarily residential, with commercial businesses along major town thoroughfares like Pleasant Valley Boulevard.

Taps on 2nd Tavern & Grill, a popular weekend hangout spot, has a full bar and serves American food like wings and loaded nachos. Pleasant Valley Boulevard leads directly to Logan Valley Mall, about 2 miles south. The mall has major retailers such as Macy's, H&M and Old Navy.
