Small southwest Amarillo neighborhood along Interstate 27
Tucked between Interstate 27 and Bell Street, Glendale is an older Amarillo neighborhood starting to be revisited with new construction. While most homes were built between the 1970s and 1980s, new construction Craftsman bungalows have recently begun to populate the community. Located in southwest Amarillo, it puts homebuyers in one of the city’s largest retail corridors and the A-minus-rated Amarillo Independent School District. “Glendale is a quaint little community,” says Debbie Dodson, a Realtor with Coldwell Banker First Equity, who has sold homes in the neighborhood. “If you’re looking to scale down and buy a smaller home, there are some pretty little streets in there that can accommodate that.”

Smaller Craftsman bungalows on clean property lots
Glendale’s wide streets are named after prominent universities throughout the country. They are lined by an interconnected sidewalk system that makes the community walkable. Craftsman bungalow homes and the occasional ranch-style range from 1,300 to 2,300 square feet. Pride of ownership shines through as tight property lots are well-manicured and highlighted by at least one tree. Homes feature driveways that lead to a garage. While this is an established neighborhood, some new construction has started. Like most original inventory, the new construction homes are Craftsman bungalows. “The newer homes being built are coming up really fast,” Dodson says. Original and new homes sell between $175,000 and $350,000, and they move faster than the national average, with listings lasting 17 days.
Glendale is a quiet neighborhood with plenty of sidewalks for daily walks.

A chance to earn the Thrive Scholarship after graduation
Glendale is part of the Amarillo Independent School District, which gets an A-minus on Niche and has around 30,000 students. The AISD offers school choice, so parents can choose the campus that best fits their child’s specific needs, even if it is not a zoned school. Students attend Windsor Elementary and advance to Bonham Middle School and Amarillo High School. All three schools rate as an A-minus on Niche. The high school offers athletic teams and a fine arts department that includes band and theater. “All AISD graduates that meet certain requirements are eligible for the Thrive Scholarship,” says April Brownlee, who works in the district's communication department. “The scholarship pays for up to 60 hours of tuition, along with books and fees at Amarillo College.”

High winds in Amarillo
Chicago calls itself the Windy City, but in reality, Amarillo should probably have the crown. Due to consistent low pressure in the atmosphere and mostly open space, wind gusts average around 13 mph, ranking it as the windiest city in America annually. The city can experience all weather, including freezing temperatures, days over 100 degrees, severe thunderstorms, tornadoes and flooding. Glendale has no increased flood risk, but the Federal Emergency Management Agency encourages Texas homebuyers to purchase flood insurance because of the state’s history with flooding.
