Established neighborhood meets Amarillo industry
Route 66 is one of Amarillo’s most notable attractions, but few neighborhoods are as influenced by the famous highway as North Amarillo. Route 66 splits the neighborhood into two distinct halves. The portion north of the road is filled with houses, local restaurants and churches, while the area south of Route 66 consists of railyards and industrial parks. “That area of Amarillo can be described as a blend of residential and industrial areas, with a mix of local businesses, community parks, and a strong sense of local culture,” says Gabby Valcenia, a Realtor with Century 21 Key Realty who has lived in the Panhandle for over 14 years. As one of the city’s most established neighborhoods, North Amarillo also has the benefit of a lower price point compared to more rapidly developing communities on the other side of the city.

Midcentury bungalows fill residential North Amarillo
The residential portion of North Amarillo on the north side of Route 66 is filled with bungalows under 1,500 square feet. Most properties are from the 1940s and range from $100,000 to $200,000. “When we talk about these neighborhoods in particular, they’re going to be an older, established neighborhood in more of a first-time homebuyer type of price point,” says Melissa Atchley, a lifelong Texan and Associated Broker with Mgroup. “We don’t see a lot of movement in these neighborhoods since it’s not growing or developing.” While sidewalks can be hard to find, the local streets tend to be flat and easy to traverse. Gardens and blooming trees are commonly found in the fenced-in yards surrounding most homes. North Amarillo is also located directly in one of Amarillo’s floodplains, and homeowners stay prepared for storms and high winds year-round.
