Local landscape contributes to extreme weather and occasional smells

Amarillo's surrounding flat, prairie landscape and low atmospheric pressure combine to make it one of the windiest cities in the country. Those living in Amarillo may sometimes catch a smell of the cattle ranches that surround the city, but the constant wind flow also makes the city air some of the cleanest in the country. Amarillo is also known for its extreme temperatures, with summer days clocking in at 100 degrees while winter freezes are common.
