South Georgia-Shores
Smaller brick ranch-style houses and bungalows
Wide neighborhood streets have mature landscapes, which isn’t guaranteed in every Amarillo neighborhood. Brick ranch-style houses and bungalows range from just under 1,000 square feet to just a tad over 2,000 square feet. Properties rest on compact lots with neat front yards and feature driveways and attached garages. Most homes sell for around $115,000 to just under $300,000, with larger homes costing a bit more. “The market seems a little slow right now,” White says. “Showings seem to be down, but it ebbs and flows. The market is still moving, but it could be doing better.”Three diploma tracks at Amarillo High School
South Georgia-Shores is part of the Amarillo Independent School District (AISD), which gets an A-minus on Niche and serves a little more than 30,000 students. The district offers a school choice program to parents so they can choose the school that best fits their child’s needs. Students attend South Georgia Elementary School in the community, and the school gets a B-plus on Niche. Fannin Middle School on South Rusk Street scores a B. Children progress to the A-minus-rated Amarillo High School. The high school offers an International Baccalaureate, AP Capstone and standard diploma. According to April Brownlee, who works in the AISD’s Communication Department, high school students can spend part of their day at AmTech Career Academy, which offers several career schools, including the School of Media Arts.Community park next to South Georgia Elementary School
Adjoining the elementary school is South Georgia School Park on Susan Drive, which offers ample green space and seating for picnics, a playground and hard-surfaced basketball courts. Amarillo Wesley Community Center South is a nonprofit affiliated with the Polk Street United Methodist Church. It opened in 2020, but the center has served the Amarillo community for 70 years providing affordable childcare, after-school programs and summer camps for children of all backgrounds. The Shores Swim Club on Emory Court is a community pool that is a hot spot in the summer and features a diving board, clubhouse and a grass volleyball court.New commercial development along Southwest 58th Avenue
Most of the commercial development here has taken place at the southern end of the neighborhood along Southwest 58th Avenue. Walmart Neighborhood Market was among the first additions, but more recently, a new Phillips gas station and adjoining convenience store have added to the options. While fast food favorites Starbucks and McDonald's were the first to open in the area, two new fast-casual restaurants are also along the roadway. Taco Joe on Georgia serves Tex-Mex cuisine and is a place to watch big games on its multiple televisions. Ovr-Eze is right next door and severs brunch with cocktails. North on the Canyon Expressway are numerous car dealerships and a Walmart Supercenter.Jazztober Fest at the Historic Bivins House
Being a little more than 5 miles from downtown gives residents proximity to many of the city’s community gatherings such as an Amarillo Sod Poodles baseball game at Hodgetown Stadium or a performance by the Amarillo Ballet at the Globe-News Center for Performing Arts. City Center Amarillo hosts annual events, including Jazztober Fest in October. The event takes place at the Historic Bivins House, the nonprofit’s headquarters, with musicians playing on the porch to on-lookers with chairs and blankets on the lawn.Major Amarillo roadways near South Georgia-Shores
