Northridge Heights is a suburb on the north end of Ames
Northridge Heights is one of Ames' more sought-after neighborhoods for its newer homes and distance from the hustle and bustle that forms around Iowa State University. However, residents still maintain access to all the city's best amenities, including trendy dining options, well-maintained public green spaces and NCAA Division I athletic events at the university. "It's a quality neighborhood, and it's a very active place," says Realtor Paul Livingston, who lived in the area for six years and now sells homes there with Hunziker & Associates. "People are always out walking pets and riding bikes." There is a good mix of townhouses and single-family homes complimented by a highly rated school district.
Contemporary-style homes and townhouses from the early 2000s
The median single-family home price is roughly $490,000, above the Ames and national medians. The neighborhood is almost entirely made up of early-2000s Contemporary-style homes priced from $400,000 to $770,000. On the neighborhood's south end, townhouses are priced from $300,000 to $520,000. Trains run along the neighborhood's east side, but only about two trains pass through a day. "It was never a big noise issue while I was living there," Livingston says.
Schools within the highly rated Ames Community School District
Most of the neighborhood's children begin their educations at Fellows Elementary, which has an A rating from Niche. Kids move on to the B-rated Ames Middle and, from there, attend the A-minus-rated Ames High, which is based in a $137 million building that opened in 2022. All three schools have math and reading proficiencies above state and national averages.
A central green space in Northridge Heights
In the center of the neighborhood, there is a park with a full-length basketball court, grills, covered shelters and a playground. There are also several ponds throughout. Residents can bike along paved paths to Moore Memorial Park, which has basketball courts, picnic tables and covered shelters.
Residents enjoy restaurants in Somerset Village
Shopping and dining options are on the neighborhood's southeast corner. The locally owned Burgie's Coffee is where patrons enjoy artisanal coffee and all-day breakfast options. There is also a Fareway grocery store. Less than five minutes south of the neighborhood, Somerset Village has a cluster of restaurants, including a chic Japanese restaurant called Wasabi and a Mexican restaurant called El Azteca.
Entertainment is a draw at Iowa State University
Iowa State University, which is about 10 minutes south of the neighborhood, is the city's primary source of entertainment. Jack Trice Stadium fills with over 60,000 fans for Big 12 football games, and Hilton Coliseum can hold around 14,300 fans for its men's and women's basketball games. Also on campus, Stephens Auditorium hosts touring ballets, musicians and comedians.
Getting around Ames
Mary Greeley Medical Center is about 10 minutes southeast of Northridge Heights via Bloomington Road and Duff Avenue. Public bus stops along Bloomington Road connect residents to the rest of Ames. Des Moines International Airport is less than an hour south of Ames via Interstate 35.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
