Onion Creek is a rural suburb 10 minutes from Iowa State University
Just outside of Ames, Onion Creek offers spacious lots and rural scenery. “People here love gardening and keeping animals like horses and goats,” says Realtor Paul Livingston, who sells homes in the neighborhood with Hunziker & Associates. Iowa State University’s lecture halls, arenas and performance halls are all within 10 minutes. Families can benefit from the amenities of a college campus while still enjoying the peace and quiet of the suburbs. Although Onion Creek technically falls outside of Ames, the city’s highly rated public school district operates the community's schools. The neighborhood draws commuters with growing families. The CAP Index crime score is 1 out of 10, compared to a national average of 4 out of 10.
Onion Creek's homes are older ranch styles and new Contemporary styles
Home prices range from roughly $300,000 to $825,000, depending on size, age and style. The average home value is around $550,000. “Thanks to the wide disparity in home prices, there are options for a broad swath of homebuyers from first-time buyers to folks who are looking for a large new build,” Livingston says. The home styles are eclectic, with properties built from the early 20th century until today. There is a mix of ranch-style houses, lodge styles, New Traditional styles and Contemporary styles. Many of the lots are less than an acre, but homebuyers can also find lots that are up to five acres.
Students attend the highly rated Ames Community School District
Children begin their educations at Sawyer Elementary, which has a B Niche rating, before attending Ames Middle School, which also has a B. Ames High School has an A-minus grade. All three schools have math and reading proficiencies above state and national averages.
Dining in Ames includes sushi and farm-to-table meals
Residents shop and dine in Ames. Stange Road is lined with several restaurants, including a chic sushi spot called Wasabi and a farm-to-table boutique bar called The Café. Residents purchase groceries at Fareway. North Grand Mall is home to several retailers like Kohl’s and JCPenney.
Green space, a golf club and community art near Onion Creek
Ada Hayden Heritage Park has a fishing lake, hiking trails and wetlands for bird watching. Some families buy memberships at Ames Golf & Country Club, which has an 18-hole course, a clubhouse, a pool and tennis courts. Located south of the neighborhood, Reliable Street is a former feed mill that was converted into a community art space. The space holds poetry readings, live musical performances and visual art displays. It also has gardening space and a café known for its crepes.
Residents enjoy college sports and concerts at Iowa State University
About 10 minutes away, Iowa State sporting events are a major source of entertainment. The football team plays other Big 12 Conference teams at Jack Trice Stadium, which holds over 60,000 fans. Musicians like Paul McCartney and The Rolling Stones have also performed at the venue. The men’s and women’s basketball teams play at Hilton Coliseum, which fills with over 14,000 fans.
Commuters travel about 40 miles south to Des Moines
CyRide public buses stop regularly along Ontario Street on their way into the city. Commuters can also take Interstate 35 about 40 miles south to Des Moines, which has the nearest international airport. Mary Greeley Medical Center is located in Ames.
