A former agricultural and mill town, Amesbury is now a suburban community with approximately 17,000 residents. Industrial buildings have been reinvented to house condos, restaurants and other businesses. With a lively downtown art and culinary scene, peaceful New England homes and proximity to highways, the city has gained prominence as a desirable and convenient bedroom community. The median household income is $100,599, about the same as the state median. Many people work outside of Amesbury with jobs in healthcare, biotechnology, education and manufacturing sectors. “Amesbury is like Cheers. Everyone knows your name,” says Cathy Toomey with Stone Ridge Properties, who has sold homes here for 45 years. “Walking downtown can take longer than it should because you will stop and chat with so many people along the way. It is an old mill city that has come back to life. There’s energy here.”
