Essentially New England
Amherst is a rural suburb that embodies New England’s historic charm and charisma. “It’s very upscale but rural and has lots of farms. It’s quintessential New England. Homes are from the 1700s and 1800s. They are old, old homes. An affluent town that keeps to its New England roots,” says Sheri-Ann Boudreau, a 24-year resident of the area. “The Dunkin Donuts in town is in a house. People forget that it’s a Dunkin because it keeps to the roots.” The area is named after General Jeffrey Amherst, commander-in-chief of the British forces in 1760. Today, several historic landmarks and smaller greens have become town focal points.

Colonials that embody Amherst's historic charisma
Homes here are prime examples of Amherst’s historic beauty. Colonial architectures are either single families or duplexes. Lot spaces range from around 0.5 acres to over 5 acres. Exteriors are decorated with long driveways that pull up to multi-car garages. There are not too many sidewalks, but folks still walk around. Properties around Baboosic Lake are smaller cottage style, carrying less than 1,500 square feet. Home prices range from $300,000 to over $1.5 million, but most homes are between $400,000 and $750,000. “It’s just a nice community,” says Boudreau. “You hear the birds chirping and frogs croaking in the summer. It’s near a city, but you get a lot of wild

Woods, Trails, Fairways, and Private beaches
Locals are lucky to have several options for getting some fresh air. Golfers can enjoy the fairways within the acres of Amherst Country Club and Souhegan Woods Golf Club. Both offer challenging 18 holes on their manicured greens and dozens of sand traps. Outside the courses, locals can take advantage of the multiple hiking trails that stretch for miles, including Pond Parish, Grater Woods Trail, Bicentennial Trail and Haseltine Trail. Joshua Park is a smaller park with a playground and a pavilion area. On those warmer days, residents are found on the sands of Amherst Town Beach, which is a private beach for Amherst residents.

Local joints thrive in Amherst
Local joints are the primary forms of Amherst dining. Moulton’s Kitchen and Market is right in the village. This store has a tiny market filled with everyday items, handhelds, and pizzas. “Giorgio’s Restaurant is awesome. You feel like you’re in Tuscany with the olive oil and bread, out of this world,” says Boudreau. “They do Sunday brunch, lunch, and dinner. I haven’t had anything bad there.” This restaurant carries Italian staples, but folks love their cannoli dessert. The Black Forest Café and Bakery can also satisfy sweet tooth cravings with their cookies, cakes, and pies. Locals can head north 101 to find the local Hannaford grocery store. Shaw’s is another option on the south end. Other everyday essentials can be found at the Walmart Supercenter.

101 is the primary route in the Amherst area. “They have 101 that can get you to 293, 93, or you can get to Route 3. You can get from the country to sitting on Route 3,” says Boudreau. These routes get easy access to the White Mountains or Boston. Amherst is 15 miles west of the Manchester-Boston Regional Airport. This smaller airport offers destinations to nearly a dozen major airports.
