Airport Heights is a neighborly community in the middle of Anchorage

Friendly neighbors and a central location make Airport Heights a desirable place to call home in Anchorage. Just southeast of Downtown Anchorage, the community is connected by major roads, bike trails and several bus routes. It’s a neighborly place where block parties are common and walking to get coffee is a daily part of life. Parks and natural areas offer easy access to the outdoors, while the shops and restaurants of downtown are a short drive away.

General aviation hub adds jobs without disrupting daily life

The neighborhood gets its name from its location near Merrill Field Airport. This municipal facility is the second-busiest airport in the state and contributes over 1,100 jobs to the local economy. It’s a general aviation airport serving private planes and flight training. Despite being so close to the homes here, Ketchum says it doesn’t disrupt daily life. “You might notice it in the summer if you’re outside,” she says. “You get used to the noise. I don’t think it hinders the neighborhood at all.”

Homes sell quickly in central Anchorage

Most of the houses in Airport Heights are modest ranch-style homes, with some other vintage styles mixed in. The neighborhood dates back to the 1950s, with a median build year of 1969. “You have a lot of these smaller ranch homes, which you don’t necessarily have a lot of in Anchorage. When they pop up, they can go pretty quickly,” says Kimberly Ketchum, a Realtor at Coldwell Banker Endeavor Realty and Airport Heights resident. Prices typically range from the lower $200,000s to the mid-$400,000s.

Places to spend time outside in suburban Anchorage

Tikishla Park is the closest spot in the neighborhood to enjoy the outdoors. “You have a couple of baseball fields where you’ll hear the Little Leaguers playing in the summer,” Ketchum says. “Kids play on the playground, and there’s a little pond across the road on the bike path where people go and feed ducks.” Other outdoor activities nearby include:

  • Biking, jogging or cross-country skiing on the Chester Creek Trail
  • Teeing off on the public Russian Jack Springs Golf Course
  • Taking a dip in Goose Lake during the summer

Anchorage schools offer many student-centered programs

The highly rated Anchorage School District serves the neighborhood, which is zoned for Bettye Davis East Anchorage High School. East High, as it’s commonly known, offers a variety of programs, including JROTC and pathways in biomedicine and computer science. The school’s Elitnaurvik Within East program offers services and opportunities for Alaska Native and American Indian students.

Why Airport Heights is good for commuters

The neighborhood’s central location makes it easy to get around Anchorage:

  • Downtown is about a 3-mile drive via Airport Heights Avenue and Fifth Avenue.
  • The Chester Creek Trail offers a 4-mile bike ride to downtown.
  • Bus routes pass through the neighborhood on Northern Lights Boulevard, DeBarr Road and Bragaw Street.
  • Providence Alaska Medical Center and the University of Alaska Anchorage are each about 2 miles south in University Area.

Shops and restaurants close to Airport Heights

Living in Airport Heights puts you near popular local shops and restaurants, including some within the neighborhood. Ketchum says residents often walk to Fire Island Rustic Bakeshop for coffee and baked goods. Don Jose’s Mexican Restaurant is nearby on Northern Lights Boulevard, while the seafood and fine dining restaurants of downtown are about 3 miles away. “Because you’re centrally located, you can easily get downtown to different shops and restaurants in a 15-minute bike ride,” she says. Supermarkets like Costco and Fred Meyer are also close.
