A close-knit community in a convenient location
With Merrill Field Airport at the northern end of the Airport Heights neighborhood, it's easy to get away. But the close-knit community here makes it so homeowners always want to stay. "It's a terrific neighborhood with a good sense of community," says Phyllis Kruger, an Airport Heights resident and Realtor with Jack White Real Estate. "We have meetings with the council quite often. They go around and invite people. People know who everybody is." With an active community council, friendly neighbors and local shops and restaurants throughout the neighborhood, new homebuyers have no problem feeling at home here. Eclectic local attractions bring life and excitement to the neighborhood and encourage residents to gather, like Snowzilla, a 25-foot snowman that a local family builds in front of their house during the winter. Residents also benefit from a convenient location, with schools in the neighborhood, hospitals nearby and easy access to major highways that make commuting a breeze.
Scenic parks in every corner of the neighborhood
Airport Heights residents have plenty of options for outdoor recreation within the neighborhood. Tikishla Park is a 105-acre green space with several activities. The park has wooded hiking trails for residents to explore, a playground for children, and multiple sports facilities. Residents can play hockey at the Scotty Gomez Hockey Rink, which also has basketball goals that can be used during the summer. Baseball fields on East 20th Avenue and Lake Otis Parkway offer plenty of room for youth games. Sitka Street Park is a smaller public park on land owned by the airport. This recreational space has a playground, volleyball court and picnic pavilion. Residents are just north of Goose Lake, one of the city's most popular spots to swim. This park also has a playground, basketball court and baseball field. Goose Lake is accessible by car or walking trails leading from Tikishla Park across a bridge over Northern Lights Boulevard.
Local flavors from breakfast to dinner
Several local restaurants allow Airport Heights residents to dine on various cuisines just minutes from home. "People go to Don Jose's. There's a Turkish deli. There's a pizza place on the corner of Northern Lights Boulevard, not even a quarter mile away. That area right there gets a lot of attention for food," Kruger says. In addition to the restaurants on Northern Lights Boulevard, residents enjoy dining at Fire Island Rustic Bakeshop, located on East 16th Avenue. This family-owned bakery is the second location in the city and serves various breads, scones, muffins and coffee. Locals enjoy gathering with their neighbors in the morning to start their day with sweet and savory baked goods. Several grocery options are located nearby, including Carrs on Gambell Street and Costco on DeBarr Road, giving residents easy access to household essentials.
Established homes with new touches
Buyers in Airport Heights will mostly find traditional and contemporary ranch-style homes on suburban city streets. Many of the streets have sidewalks and are lined with mature pine trees that tower over the homes, adding shade and natural beauty to the neighborhood. Kruger says that several residents have renovated their homes in the area, taking a two-bedroom house with a garage, turning it into a three-bedroom home with a larger living room, and removing the garage. Three-bedroom ranch-style houses typically cost between $300,000 and $400,000. Four-bedroom properties are rare in the neighborhood, but the ones that are available cost between $350,000 and $500,000. There are some two-bedroom condos that usually cost around $150,000 to $175,000.
An easy trip to school each morning
Students in Airport Heights might attend Airport Heights Elementary School, Wendler Middle School and Bettye Davis East Anchorage High School. The elementary and middle schools are rated a C-plus by Niche, while the high school is rated a B-plus. Bettye Davis East Anchorage High, also known as East High School, serves nearly 1,800 students and has a student-teacher ratio of 19-to-1. Students can study in the biomedical and computer science programs or participate in the Army JROTC program.
Highways and buses make commuting a breeze
Multiple bus routes pass through Airport Heights, making it easy for residents to use public transit to get around Anchorage. The Northern Lights, Mountain View, Debarr and Northeast routes all have stops in the neighborhood, taking residents west to downtown, south to the University of Alaska Anchorage and Providence Alaska Medical Center or east to Northeast Anchorage. Residents who prefer to drive will have an approximately 3-mile trip downtown along Airport Heights Drive and Glenn Highway. While Merrill Field Airport is in the neighborhood, it does not serve commercial airlines. Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport is about 6.5 miles from the neighborhood, a drive that takes roughly 15 minutes. In addition to Providence Alaska Medical Center nearby, residents are also conveniently located near Alaska Regional Hospital in the neighborhood.
Free entertainment from the nearby airport
Merrill Field Airport is located on the north side of Airport Heights and serves small private planes. Kruger says the airport's noise hardly affects homeowners. "We don't really hear the noise. The little airplanes are not a big deal. I actually enjoy watching them," she says.
