Basher offers quiet living with soaring mountain views
Once a population of nine, Basher is a secluded neighborhood surrounded by beautiful parks with the Chugach Mountains as its backdrop. The neighborhood is referred to by locals as Stuckagain Heights and an oasis for nature lovers. Residents enjoy tranquility, trailheads within walking distance and pristine views of the Chugach foothills, Sleeping Lady, Mount McKinley and the city skyline. “It’s isolated and off the beaten path, but residents enjoy that about the area,” says Joy Harvey, Realtor at RE/MAX Dynamic Properties. “You have the views, beautiful wildlife, and so many things to do.”
Generous acreage, newer homes and quiet residential spaces
Basher is filled with single-family, ranch-style housing and high-end log cabins built mostly in the mid-1990s. You can get a single-family for $550,000 but most range between $650,000 to $900,000. Newer homes with two and three acres can go for up to $3 million and offer sprawling, lush lawns and luxuries like hot tubs, gated driveways and pools while maintaining a cozy feel. Residents enjoy large, wooded lots, and the neighborhood is blanketed with a towering, forested greenbelt of spruce and other Alaskan trees, ensuring absolute privacy. “While it is secluded, it’s also common for residents to hike, bike and horseback around the neighborhood,” Harvey says.
Outdoor activities include hiking, snowboarding and nature walks
Basher residents have the advantage of a wilderness experience just steps away at the Far North Bicentennial Park. With 4,000 acres of birch and spruce trees, you can bike or hike the rugged trails in summer and ski or snowboard the Nordic slopes at Hilltop Ski Area in winter. The trail offers convenient connections to Chugach State Park, and you can hop on the seven-mile Campbell Creek Trail, which offers a playground along the way, as well as spots to hop off to fuel up. The Alaska Botanical Garden is also inside the park. Open year-round, it’s home to 1,000 species of perennials, an herb garden and a subarctic rock garden with 350 types of alpine plants. “The Botanical Garden is one of my favorite spots, and it's where I recommend to my clients for places to visit,” Harvey says. “I take my kids there or go when friends visit, and you can make a whole day out of it. It’s a very easy walk, and they have little trails.”
Students attend B-rated schools with diverse activities
Students attend Baxter Elementary, Wendler Middle School and Bettye Davis East Anchorage High School. Baxter received an overall B- on Niche and is the second most diverse elementary school in the state. Bettye Davis is ranked No. 10 by Niche as one of the best high schools in Anchorage and received a B+ overall and A- for activities. The high school has titles in football and basketball and offers an Anime Guild, a culture identity program called Gui Kima and a Girls Who Code club.
Nearby shopping centers and plentiful dining options
Grab your morning coffee at Kaladi Brothers Coffee, a giant burrito from Burrito Factory or a hefty slice from Amore’s Pizza, all just four miles away. For shopping, head to Glenn Square or Tikahtnu Commons, which has a Starbucks, Ulta Beauty and Target. Tikahtnu also has a Brown Jug where you can grab a brew, and a Vietnamese restaurant, Pho Saigon.
Holiday lights and clean-ups help build a close-knit community
To keep residents engaged, The Basher Community Council puts on an annual holiday light show in the Alaska Botanical Garden, along with community cleanups, Firewise, a forest fire education program for residents and more. “They really do quite a lot to involve residents and keep up a sense of community,” Harvey says. “The light show is really fun, and it’s gorgeous to see the gardens all lit up. People look out for each other here. They know their neighbors, and people like to get involved in what’s going on.”
