Basher offers relatively remote living
With its narrow, laneless roads, heavy vegetation and scenic mountain views, Basher feels more like a nature reserve than a neighborhood. But this pastoral piece of Anchorage offers a place to live among a largely untamed Alaskan landscape. It’s an area where you can find relative seclusion, with countless restaurants and stores still within a 15-minute drive.
Large lots with ample room for families are available in Basher.

Properties command sizable swaths of land
Many of Basher’s homes are hidden up long driveways and behind tall trees. But, look closer, and you’ll find an eclectic mix of modern options. A lot of the houses here were built in the 1990s and later, and they range from log cabin-inspired options with wood paneling to New Traditional-style builds with vinyl siding. Residents are spread out from their neighbors on lots that span at least an acre, and some properties boast mountain backdrops courtesy of Basher’s location in the Chugach foothills. “It generally has large lots — more consistently large lots there,” says local Realtor Christopher Scott , who’s with Jack White Real Estate and has about 6 years of industry experience. Scott adds that Mount McKinley, the tallest peak in North America, downtown Anchorage, and Knik Arm are among the sights some can see from Basher. In this rural region, properties come with their own septic tanks. Sale prices vary from the upper $600,000s to the lower million-dollar range based on factors including square footage and condition.

Outdoor recreation is part of daily life
Basher is so integrated into the natural landscape that the only way to reach the neighborhood’s homes is through a road that cuts across the 4,000-acre Far North Bicentennial Park. The park features over 100 miles of trails for whatever floats your boat, whether hiking, biking or skiing. Thrill seekers also have the park’s dedicated ski and snowboard slope at their disposal, part of the nearby Hilltop Ski Area. The nearly 500,000-acre Chugach State Park is also a stone’s throw away. In fact, the trailhead for The Dome, a several-mile-long trail within the park, is available just off Kalmia Drive in Basher. Adventurers may spot wildlife from moose to bears while out and about on area trails. Kids can explore the playground at Forsythe Park in the adjacent Mid-Hillside neighborhood, and golfers can tackle the rolling fairways at the 18-hole Anchorage Golf Course, which is open to the public. Anchorage’s nearly 24-hour sunlight at points of late spring and early summer lengthens the time you can spend outdoors.

Scenic roadway connects residents to the rest of the city
This neighborhood’s rustic main roads, like Basher Drive and Campbell Airstrip Road, provide a portal between Basher’s tranquility and Anchorage’s more developed areas. “It just has a certain vibe to it that you’re getting out into nature and into what it’s actually like here in most of Alaska,” Scott says of Basher. “Because you drive along Campbell Airstrip Road, which turns into Basher Drive, and that is easily a five- to 10-minute drive through the woods, through [Far North Bicentennial Park]. Leaving work, you just go into nature and have some time to relax and get home. And you’re surrounded by trees and wildlife, moose. It’s a very pleasant and natural setting.” Downtown Anchorage is 8 miles from Basher, via Basher Drive, Campbell Airstrip Road, Tudor Road and Alaska state Route 1. The Ted Stevens International Airport is also about 9 miles away, while Providence Alaska Medical Center is a 4-mile trip.
