Birchwood offers outdoor recreation and easy access to Anchorage
With a small airport that's perfect for single-engine aircraft and Alaska's largest rifle and shotgun shooting facility, Birchwood makes an excellent jumping-off point for those who'd like to explore the country's last frontier. "We get people who see a TV show about Alaska and want to live here," says Melissa Flint, a sales associate with Century 21 Realty Solutions. This northeast Anchorage community is also just 17 miles from the nearest Target.
Homes sit on spacious lots with trees
Birchwood straddles the line between the more rural, frontier community of Chugiak on its southern and eastern boundaries and the retail hub of Eagle River, where Flint works, on its western boundary. Its narrow side streets at least try to follow a grid pattern as they cut through the forest between State Route 1 and the Knik Arm of the Cook Inlet. They're lined with ranch-style, mid-century modern, and contemporary houses that sit atop one and two-acre lots with room for a fenced yard and plenty of trees. These houses typically fetch between $500,000 and $700,000, yielding an average price slightly higher than what you'd find in Birchwood's neighboring communities.
Anchorage School District serves the community
Children in this community will attend Birchwood ABC Elementary School, which hosts a costume/dress-up day event every other Wednesday. From here, they'll move on to Mirror Lake Middle and Chugiak High Schools. All three of these schools received a B or a B-plus on Niche.com. The website also named Chugiak High the state's fourth-best high school for athletes.
Recreation ranges from paddling to fishing and dogsledding
People who'd rather not spend their free time at the Birchwood Recreation and Shooting Park can head toward Beach Lake. Here, you can rent a kayak, canoe, or stand-up paddleboard from AK Paddlesports if you need one and take it out with a view of the Chugach Mountains on the horizon. This lake doubles as an angler's paradise because it's stocked with rainbow trout, Arctic grayling, and Chinook salmon during the spring, summer, and fall. People who'd rather be in the mountains than look at them can take the Mt. Baldy Trail in Eagle River to the top of Baldy Ridge or the Peters Creek Valley Trail in Chugiak to the tops of Bear Mountain and Mt. Eklutna. Not to mention, you can always watch the Chugiak-Eagle River Chinooks, a collegiate summer league baseball team, play its home games at the Loretta French Sports Complex on State Route 1 in the summer months, and the Chugiak Dog Mushers take their sleds for a spin on the sled dog trails at Beach Lake Park during the winter months.
Dining and shopping options stretch from Birchwood to Eagle River
The Birchwood Saloon, which has served the community for 30 years, is a great place to visit on a night out. It's a quarter-mile down the Birchwood Loop Road from Three Bears Alaska, a warehouse store that sells fresh meat, produce, pantry items, liquor, guns, clothing, camping gear, and office supplies. If, for whatever reason, you don't find what you're looking for at these two places, you can always head down to a commercial strip in Eagle River bound by Business Boulevard and the Old Glenn Highway. This area hosts two grocery stores, a Carr's and a Fred Meyer, and 11 brewpubs, coffee shops, and restaurants. "We're very metropolitan," Flint says of her community.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
