Housing costs, types and options to rent
Housing in Downtown Anchorage is all over the map. “It offers a primarily renter-oriented market, featuring a strong mix of apartments, condominiums and mixed-use buildings, along with a limited number of historic homes and townhouses,” says long-time Alaskan resident and Associate Broker-in-Charge Gina Pelaia with Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices. “Studio and one-bedroom units are most common and appeal to professionals, singles and couples who value walkability and proximity to work, dining and cultural amenities.”
Though most people rent, you can also buy property. Most condos and townhouses sell in the mid-to-high $100,000s, while larger units may sell in the upper $400,000s to the low $600,000s. Bungalows and cottages are less common, starting around $100,000 and reaching the upper $400,000s.
Public transportation and commutes through Anchorage
You can get to shops, restaurants and parks on foot in Downtown Anchorage. “Many residents walk or bike, making downtown one of Anchorage’s most pedestrian-friendly areas,” Pelaia says. When commutes are out of walking range, there are plenty of other options:
• Take a People Mover bus • Call an Uber, Lyft or local taxi • Hop on Alaska Route 1 from Fifth or Sixth avenues
The city’s main cultural activities and attractions
Downtown Anchorage is the hub of entertainment in the city. You can catch live shows, from Broadway musicals to operas, at the Alaska Center for Performing Arts. The Anchorage Museum has art and science exhibits, and the Alaska Native Heritage Center features historical exhibits and demonstrations. Some of the area’s biggest events are also downtown, like the Summer Solstice Festival in June and the Anchorage Market on weekends from May through September.
Outdoor recreation without leaving downtown
Delaney Park, also known as the Park Strip, is a 13-block green space with athletic fields, an ice-skating rink and a rose garden. Town Square Park also has a seasonal ice-skating rink and hosts a summer concert series. If you want to watch the sunset behind Sleeping Lady Mountain, head to Elderberry Park. It's connected to the Coastal Trail, which runs along the edge of the Cook Inlet mud flats, providing striking views of the water.
