Rural bedroom community for surrounding towns
Hidden among the forests of Connecticut, the small town of Andover has a population of about 3,000 people. About 20 miles east from Hartford, this community is one of the few places where the fire department is run completely by volunteers. There are also only two restaurants in all of town limits. “We’ve always been a small town, just a little community in the middle of Connecticut,” says Scott Yeomans the town historian since the mid-90s, volunteer fireman with the Andover Fire Department and local resident who has spent most of his life in Andover. “Very few people drive into Andover for work.” Andover mainly acts as a bedroom community for nearby towns such as East Hartford and Hebron. The town is so small and quiet that it actually receives a crime score of 1 in all categories from the CAP Index.
Andover is a charming rural town located in Tolland County in the northeastern part of CT.
Two restaurants and nearby town for shopping
Andover is mostly rural, with only two restaurants along U.S. Route 6; Tom’s Place and Andover Pizza and Bar. Residents can stop by the Hurst Farm Country Store for organic produce, a country-style gift shop and homemade maple syrup. At Over AndOver, residents can shop for flipped furniture and locally made items like soap, art and jewelry. “We used to have a grocery store, but not anymore,” says Yeomans. “People head to Coventry or Willimantic for larger stores like Stop & Shop.” Willimantic also has big box stores like T.J. Maxx and Old Navy. Residents can also head to Ted’s IGA Supermarket in Hebron, about six miles south from the town hall.

Homes hidden in the forest or around the lake
With the sprawling land of Andover, most homes are hidden behind winding driveways and trees. Around town hall and the elementary school some homes may be laid out in the more classic suburban layout, but these are the exceptions to the area. Colonial Revivals, bi-levels and Cape Cod are the most common housing types, beginning around $330,000 and reaching $640,000. Lakeside homes around Andover Lake will be more expensive, beginning around $535,000 and reaching almost $1 million. Keeping with the forest theme, there are also A-Frame cabins that begin around $335,000 and reach $500,000. While most homes were built before 1975, there are some homes, especially around Andover Lake, that were built as recently as 2019.

State forest with hiking and hunting
Nathan Hale State Forest, named after the Revolutionary War spy who was caught and hanged by the British, has over 1,000 acres where hikers can lace up boots for a day of hiking or hunters can wait patiently for small game and the occasional deer. It’s recommended that hikers wear bright orange (commonly called blaze orange or safety orange) during hunting season. The privately owned Andover Lake offers discount memberships to residents of Andover who don’t live around the lake.

Town elementary school and regional middle and high school
Students in Andover begin school at Andover Elementary School for kindergarten through sixth grade. Andover Elementary receives an A-minus from Niche. They then attend the B-plus-rated RHAM Middle School for seventh and eighth grade. At RHAM High School, which receives an A from Niche, students can take Advanced Placement courses and earn college credit from local universities like the University of Connecticut.
Andover Elementary has about 175 students in grades Pre-K through six.

Town parades and lake fishing events
The town may be small, but still has events throughout the year. “Andover has an annual Memorial Day Parade, Veteran’s Day celebrations,” says Yeomans. “There’s also an active youth soccer and basketball team with Hebron.” Andover Lake hosts events for members and non-members, including a Father’s Day Fishing Derby and movie nights throughout the year.
Transportation
U.S. Route 6 goes through the middle of town limits and has only one bus. However, the bus rarely comes through, so residents rely on vehicles to reach nearby towns. “Other communities have major roads Interstate 84 and Route 2 that go through them,” says Yeomans, “And Andover is right between those two.”
Andover commuters can park & ride into Hartford.
