Angola's proximity to the lakes and a tight-knit community
Angola is a triple hitter, combining a small-town feel with the region’s lakes and a major area university. Both Trine University and Steuben County attract a fair number of seasonal residents to Angola, Indiana, with most looking for a college town or access to recreation on the lakes. This area's 9,000 permanent residents are part of a friendly community where people make an effort to get to know their neighbors. “It’s a very tight-knit community,” says Realtor Deb Rodriguez with Mike Thomas Associates. “For instance, if there’s someone in the community who is sick, it’s not unlikely there won’t be several fundraisers to take care of that person.”

Countless county lakes and Angola's 100-acre community park
“We have 101 lakes in our county — that’s our thing,” Rodriguez says. “You can go from a small fishing lake to the larger, all-sports lakes.” Fox, Booth and Center lakes are the closest to Angola, while the larger lakes are nearby in the Crooked Lake and Glen Eden areas. Commons Park is Angola’s largest park space, and it spans 100 acres. The park has a wooden playground, basketball courts and athletic fields all surrounded by a nature trail. Nearby, the university grounds, or the Zollner Golf Course, is open to the public and the YMCA of Steuben County offers pickleball courts and access to an indoor pool. The city also has plans to add a new inclusive playground, a splash pad and a community gathering space to the property. The city broke ground in November 2024 and construction is ongoing.

Historic Nationals and more recent New Traditionals and ranch-style homes
Angola’s median housing price is about $290,000. National style homes built between the 1880s and early 1900s sit closer to downtown, while newer subdivisions with ranch-styles and New Traditionals fan out from the city's center. Lakefront properties are also available here, and most start in the mid to high $500,000s and can reach prices in the low millions. Compared to the national and state rates, violent and property crime in Angola is low.
Newer ranch homes are popping up on the outskirts of Angola.

Downtown's Art Deco theater and the soldiers memorial
Downtown Angola is a national historic district centered around Maumee and Wayne streets. Its buildings span a century — from the 1860s to the 1960s. The Steuben County Soldiers Monument rises over the square and the surrounding buildings. In addition to the city’s local restaurants, the Brokaw Movie House is also located downtown. The Art Deco theater only has two screening rooms inside and shows box office hits. Wayne Street is also home to supermarkets and big-box stores in the shopping centers on either side of the thoroughfare. This is also where a lot of Angola’s employers are located. Manufacturers like T & S Equipment Co. and Vestil sit on the northern side of the city off Wayne Street. The Cameron Memorial County Hospital, located on the east side of Angola, is another major area employer contributing to this city's economy.

Concerts on the water and in the park around Angola
Music is a common theme for the events in and around Angola. Throughout the summer, Angola has concerts at the bandshell at Commons Park. While Pokagon State Park, to the north, offers recreational opportunities and hosts seasonal events. “They do a concert on the lake. The philharmonic orchestra sets up on the lawn, and people come in on boats for the concert,” Rodriguez says. “Crooked Lake has the largest music festival on the water — they build a stage out on the water.”
The interstate connects to the county lakes
Maumee and Wayne streets are the community’s major thoroughfares, connecting residents with shopping centers and parks across Angola. Interstate 69 runs along the western side of the city, connecting residents with the rest of the county and its lakes. In the winter, Angola can get snowstorms, so the city sends out plows and salt spreaders to help with the winter weather.
