Calm community on the Chain o' Lakes, with a quick commute to the city
Prime views of pink sunsets above calm waters are a staple of evenings in West Antioch, where locals boating and fishing on Lake Marie or Bluff Lake stay out a bit longer to watch the stars come out. Connected to two of the lakes on the sprawling Chain o' Lakes in northwest Chicagoland, this residential community may be a prime destination for visitors, but it easily shines as a living space for those seeking a change of pace. “With the Metra and highways nearby, you are basically equidistant to Chicago and Milwaukee,” says Dana Pierson-Emering, a Realtor and broker associate with @properties Christie's International Real Estate. Pierson-Emering has sold homes in Antioch and northern Illinois for more than 15 years.
Varied home selections near Bluff Lake
While many communities in the Chain o’ Lakes region are known for their vacation homes, Pierson-Emering says the dynamic has been changing. “More and more people in the last 10 years, and especially since Covid, started moving up to their lake homes full time," she says. Houses in the community generally date from the 1950s to the 1980s. Custom estates with lakefront access line the westernmost reaches of the community, with some properties having their own piers or boat launches. Homes closer to the town center and Route 59 offer traditional styles and a suburban feel in line with the area’s mid-century origins. Values generally range from $250,000 to $600,000. Larger custom properties with waterfront access have sold at much higher prices, with recent sales including $850,000 for a 2,500-square-foot waterfront home and nearly $1.5 million for a grand 6,520-square-foot vacation home with five bedrooms, a pool and a cabana.

Independence Day parades, local concerts and community theater
“Antioch does Fourth of July, a parade with an entire day of activities. They also do wine walks, which really gets people out in the main street of the town where there are local shops,” Pierson-Emering says. In the summertime, Main and Orchard is the place to be in town for the Antioch Farmers Market, held from June through October. Around the same time of year, the Antioch Bandshell hosts the It's Thursday Concert Series, where Chicago area bands bring a variety of genres and recognizable jams to town. Year-round entertainment in town includes movies at the Antioch Theater, community theater shows at the Palette, Masque and Lyre Theater and live music at The Rivalry Alehouse.
