From farmland to a bustling commercial center
Situated just south of the Twin Cities, is the community of Apple Valley. Established in 1859 as a farming community known as the Lebanon Township, in the mid-1950s developers began to convert the area into a major commercial hub. Since then, farmland has been replaced by residential homes, robust shopping centers and restaurants; and Downtown Apple Valley is at the center of it all. Whether residents want to spend some time at a park, grab a bite to eat or hit the shops, there’s always plenty to do. Primarily a commercialized area, Downtown Apple Valley is primarily comprised of apartments, retail and office buildings. However, on the outskirts of downtown, there are also pockets of quiet residential streets lined with single-family homes and townhouses. This, says resident and Realtor Stefan Petrashek, is because of the area’s “many dedicated city planners and managers,” who worked to design the community and its commercial center to be as harmonious as possible.
Highway 42 and Cedar Avenue is the main shopping hub for Apple Valley.

Downtown Apple Valley is a hub of commercial activity. Residents have their pick of shopping at the Apple Valley Square mall, which is home to stores like PetCo, Jo-Ann Fabrics, thrift shops, clothing stores, a bookstore and a florist. There are plenty of big-box retailers here, ranging from a Walmart Supercenter, a Target and a Home Depot, to regional grocery stores like Cub and the Fresh Thyme Market. For a breakfast out, Valley Diner is a vintage spot that serves breakfast all day and is known for its pancakes, French toast and milkshakes. Dining options include Celts Craft House, an Irish-themed restaurant featuring Emerald Isle classics like shepherd’s pie, bangers and mash and Guinness. Or, Homshuk is a Mexican restaurant with a menu that includes tacos, steak and chicken dishes, fajitas, burritos and more.
