Parks, playgrounds and practicality in Redwood
About a mile from Apple Valley’s commercial corridor, Redwood sits roughly 20 miles south of Minneapolis and St. Paul, far enough to escape the hubbub but close enough for an easy commute. “You’re in the outer-ring suburbs where if you jump up high enough, you can pretty much see Iowa,” says Eric Sharbo, a Realtor with Re/Max Advantage Plus who has been selling homes in the area for 25 years. “But we’ve got such great highway infrastructure there, it’s still a very reasonable and realistic commute to the Twin Cities.” The Apple Valley Community Center forms the heart of the neighborhood, surrounded by ballfields and green space. “Looking at that area, the number of parks, playgrounds, bike paths — they’re just everywhere,” Sharbo says.

Ranch-style and split-level homes date to the 1960s
Redwood is mostly residential, with single-family homes making up the bulk of the property mix. Many homes date to the 1960s and include paved driveways and garages, with lot sizes measuring about a quarter acre. Most of the curving, tree-lined streets lack sidewalks, so navigating on foot can be tricky, especially in winter. Home sales are infrequent, and when properties enter the market, they tend to sell about twice as fast as the national average. Recently, ranch-style and split-level homes in this neighborhood sold for $300,000 to $450,000.

Apple Valley Community Center is in the heart of Redwood
Ballfields surround the Apple Valley Community Center at Hayes Park campus, the neighborhood’s centrally located gathering spot. The complex is next to Westview Elementary and home to an ice-skating rink, a martial arts school and a senior citizen center. At Redwood Park, walking trails ramble past sports courts, a baseball field, a small pond and a playground tucked into a shady grove. The Redwood Community Pool is currently closed for construction, with the updated facility scheduled to reopen in 2026. The outdoor pool is open to the public, but visitors are subject to an entry fee. Down the road from the pool, Apple Grove Park offers walking trails, a sand-based playground and plenty of shade. Residents are less than a mile from Alimagnet Park, an 85-acre green space with nature trails, picnic areas, a disc golf course and canoe access to the recreational lake.

Restaurants and retail at Apple Valley Square
Apple Valley’s primary retail and restaurant corridor is about a mile away at the intersection of Cedar Avenue and 150th Street West. Apple Valley Square shopping mall has clothing shops, thrift stores, a Petco and an Aldi supermarket. The Home Depot and Sam’s Club are also nearby. Numerous restaurants, especially fast-food chains, can be seen in every direction. “The funny thing about that corridor on Cedar and 150th? There are nine chicken places within a block of each other,” Sharbo says. “Everything from Raising Cane’s to KFC. People laugh about that all the time.” The Tavern Grill, a Midwestern chain with an extensive menu, has a strong local following.

Taking I-35 to the Twin Cities
Redwood residents are 13 miles from Minneapolis-St. Paul Airport and roughly 20 miles from the Twin Cities. The best way to get to the larger cities is to hop on Interstate 35E, about 2 miles away. Commuter buses on Apple Valley’s Metro Transit system stop along 150th Street on their way to the Burnsville station, where riders can connect to lines heading to Mall of America and downtown Minneapolis. Metro Transit operates buses, light rail and commuter rail routes throughout the entire Twin Cities region. Minnesota Valley Transit Authority (MVTA) buses are also available and offer a convenient option for residents commuting to nearby suburbs like Burnsville and Rosemount. Health care services are available at M Health Fairview Ridges Hospital, about 3 miles away.
Protecting against potential hail damage
According to FEMA, the Twin Cities region has a higher-than-average risk of hailstorms, especially during late spring and early summer. Homeowners' insurance can help protect against storm damage. It’s also a good idea to look for properties with garages large enough to accommodate all the family vehicles.
