Scott Highlands has over a dozen public parks and outdoor destinations, including Long Lake Park, which offers canoe access to enjoy the water or fish for Walleye and largemouth bass. Faith Park has baseball diamonds and an ice skating rink in winter. Greenleaf Park has two pickleball courts and a children’s play area. “The city does a lot for the local parks,” says Junker. The Minnesota Zoo is right next door on the neighborhood’s northern border. Students can begin their education at Greenleaf Elementary School before attending Falcon Ridge Middle School, both of which receive a B-plus grade from Niche. Apple Valley Freedom Days celebrate the nation’s independence with a week of family friendly festivities, including a parade, carnival, fun run and fireworks display. The Mid-Winter Fest is held weeks after each new year and includes live music, hot drinks and wagon rides.The Twin Cities are about 20 miles away
Interstate 35E and State Highway 77 are the area’s main thoroughfares, providing a straightforward route to Minneapolis, less than 20 miles north. St. Paul is around 20 miles northeast. The Metro Transit bus line is available and stops on Johnny Cake Ridge Road.Two popular shopping centers are just a few miles south
Around 2 miles southwest, the shopping area surrounding 150th Street West and Cedar Avenue offers various chain restaurants, services and retail like Burlington, Half Price Books and Walmart Supercenter. Locals also head 5 miles south to 160th Street West, where a shopping center with Target and Hy-Vee has sprung up in recent years. “It’s part of how quickly everything’s evolving in the area,” says Hartig. “Around 15 years ago, it was all farmlands out there. Now there’s a ton of shopping, food, everything.” Ole Piper offers laid-back food in a family friendly atmosphere. Though their menu is varied, their specialty is pizza, with deep-dish, Chicago-style and gluten-free options. Southern Social adds an upscale twist to classic staples like fried green tomatoes, jambalaya and chicken and waffles.
