Scott Highlands is a well-maintained suburb beloved by families

Central to Apple Valley, Scott Highlands is a woodsy suburban community prized for its ample green spaces, low crime rates and access to shopping and highly ranked schools. “You get a lot of young families,” says Edina Realty agent Michael Hartig. “There’s a ton of parks – it’s a great place for kids.” The area’s CAP Index Crime Score is a 1 out of 10 – the lowest score possible. “It’s a desirable neighborhood – really family friendly,” says Nicole Junker, a Realtor with the Chad Schwendeman Real Estate Group. At around 3 square miles of residential area, the neighborhood offers diverse housing options in a well-maintained suburb.

A wide variety of housing styles, from townhouses to colonials

The streets in Scott Highlands wind gently around parks and ponds, frequently ending in cul-de-sacs. Sidewalks are a constant throughout the area, creating convenient walkability for joggers and dog walkers. Quarter-acre lots and larger ones are typical, allowing privacy and breathing room between homes. Lawns and backyards are shaded beneath mature pine and ash trees. Two-story townhouses are available and typically run between the high $100,000s and low $400,000s based on size and condition. Midcentury split-level and ranch-styles range from the low $300,000s to the mid-$500,000s. Newer colonial and contemporary craftsman homes are priced between the low $400,000s and low $700,000s, depending on amenities like waterfront views. “You’ll see a wide range of houses here,” says Hartig, whose family has lived in the area for three generations.

Local parks and the Minnesota Zoo prompt people to enjoy the outdoors

Scott Highlands has over a dozen public parks and outdoor destinations, including Long Lake Park, which offers canoe access to enjoy the water or fish for Walleye and largemouth bass. Faith Park has baseball diamonds and an ice skating rink in winter. Greenleaf Park has two pickleball courts and a children’s play area. “The city does a lot for the local parks,” says Junker. The Minnesota Zoo is right next door on the neighborhood’s northern border. In addition to over 4,500 animals, the zoo hosts regular events, including nature walks, summer camp and behind-the-scenes zoological experiences.

Highly ranked academics and athletics at Eastview Senior High

Students can begin their education at Greenleaf Elementary School before attending Falcon Ridge Middle School, both of which receive a B-plus grade from Niche. Eastview Senior High School has an A and is well-known for its comprehensive college prep program and athletics, with 21 state championships since its founding in 1997. “Eastview has one of the highest-rated academic programs in Minnesota,” says Hertig. “The school district alone pulls in people more than anything else.”

Apple Valley celebrates the seasons with family friendly festivities

Apple Valley Freedom Days celebrate the nation’s independence with a week of family friendly festivities, including a parade, carnival, fun run and fireworks display. The Mid-Winter Fest is held weeks after each new year and includes live music, hot drinks and wagon rides.

The Twin Cities are about 20 miles away

Interstate 35E and State Highway 77 are the area’s main thoroughfares, providing a straightforward route to Minneapolis, less than 20 miles north. St. Paul is around 20 miles northeast. The Metro Transit bus line is available and stops on Johnny Cake Ridge Road.

Two popular shopping centers are just a few miles south

Around 2 miles southwest, the shopping area surrounding 150th Street West and Cedar Avenue offers various chain restaurants, services and retail like Burlington, Half Price Books and Walmart Supercenter. Locals also head 5 miles south to 160th Street West, where a shopping center with Target and Hy-Vee has sprung up in recent years. “It’s part of how quickly everything’s evolving in the area,” says Hartig. “Around 15 years ago, it was all farmlands out there. Now there’s a ton of shopping, food, everything.” Ole Piper offers laid-back food in a family friendly atmosphere. Though their menu is varied, their specialty is pizza, with deep-dish, Chicago-style and gluten-free options. Southern Social adds an upscale twist to classic staples like fried green tomatoes, jambalaya and chicken and waffles.
