A mile from Downtown Appleton on River Drive
River Drive is a residential street flanked by the Fox River to the west and Memorial Drive to the east, a tight enclave of traditional homes and suburban spirit. Midcentury builds are embellished with chalk drawings in the driveway and mature trees out front. Though most won’t find scenic views of the river in their backyard, riverfront homes typically feature their own private walkways and docks. Thanks to nearby thoroughfares, including College Avenue, it’s hardly a commute to check out modern eats, city-wide festivals, private schooling options and bustling community parks. Less than 3 miles north of the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh at Fox Cities, residents are privy to campus amenities, including the planetarium and community garden. Though public transportation is limited, River Drive is a convenient suburb just a mile or so from Downtown Appleton.

Midcentury homes and riverfront builds
On River Drive, chalk drawings decorate the sidewalks with basketball nets towering above. Halloween brings carved pumpkins to the porches, along with colorful fall flags that’ll inevitably be switched out for the holidays come winter. Midcentury builds outline the rounded residential street, where ranch-style homes neighbor bilevels and Colonial Revivals. The occasional custom build might feature the gables of a Tudor Revival or the rounded entryway of a cottage. Modest yards with gardens and shrubbery border paved driveways and detached garages. Homes on the waterfront of the Fox River range in price from $400,000 to $600,000, with rare larger plots reaching around $1 million. Properties farther inland are comparatively priced between $250,000 and $400,000.

Iced coffee, thrifting and the only piano bar in the city
Caribou Coffee sits on Memorial Drive, where Fair Market Thrift Store is across the street for a weekend excursion of brunching and thrifting. Nearby is George’s Steak House, colloquially known to prepare the best steak and prime rib in Appleton. Open for more than 70 years, George’s is actually the only piano bar in the city. The restaurant’s 9-foot Steinway grand piano is well over 125 years old, filling the barroom with lively sing-alongs. Memorial Drive also hosts the nearest grocery store, Pick ‘n Save, less than a mile south. Across the river, Appleton’s bustling central thoroughfare—College Avenue—is lined with modern dining options. Tipsy Taco & Tequila Bar is a local favorite for its Frida Kahlo-themed murals and broad selection of authentic tacos. Cruising along, it’s hard to miss Spats’ mint green building. The classic American fare is sourced from local family businesses including Acoca Coffee, Stone Arch Brewery and Jacobs Meat Market. The only beer available on tap is Wisconsin-made, an ode to the state’s expansive brewing history.

From Art in the Park to a Mile of Music
Every Saturday at dawn, The Downtown Appleton Farm Market packs more than 100 vendors onto the thoroughfare’s already bustling sidewalks, selling everything from locally-grown produce to handcrafted items, fried food, coffee and pastries. Running June through October, the market overlaps with Appleton’s annual Mile of Music, which takes place the first week of August. Guests can grab a croissant in the morning and return in the evening for free access to 40 unique venues hosting 200 up-and-coming musicians. City Park is home to Appleton’s “Art in the Park,” a two-day festival inviting 200 artists to show their work beside local food vendors and a lineup of live musicians. Jones Park shares a similar reputation, as guests flock with lawn chairs for the annual summer concert series. When summer ends, Octoberfest begins. Held in September, the drinking festivities kick off with a ceremonial toast to the Spaten keg beer tapping at Oktoberfest in Munich, Germany.

Limited Valley Transit means car-dependence on River Drive
Downtown Appleton is a mile north on Memorial Drive, which is lined with Valley Transit bus stops. Bike lanes, however, are few and far between around River Drive. Due to the lack of walkable public transportation options, residents remain car-dependent for both local and distant travel. Ascension St. Elizabeth Hospital is a mile east, but Appleton International Airport remains about 7 miles west on Prospect Avenue. There are notably no buses that stop at the airport. Green Bay commuters can expect a 34-mile trip north on Interstate 41, while Oshkosh remains 19 miles south.

The University of Wisconsin Oshkosh at Fox Cities
The University of Wisconsin Oshkosh at Fox Cities is less than 3 miles south. Located on campus, the Barlow Planetarium was the first of its kind in Wisconsin, hosting star and laser shows open to the public several days a week. Similarly, the UWO Fox Cities Community Garden was started in 2006 by a group of students looking to build community. Locals are welcome to partake by renting a plot and planting their own produce or flowers. The Attic Theatre is also on campus, where guests can catch one of many play productions throughout the year. Just north across the river, the Hearthstone Historic House Museum is often overlooked by Appleton natives. But the home was actually the very first in the world to be lit using the Edison hydroelectric system. “As it was being built, the owner went on a fishing trip and heard about the light bulb through his friend,” Kelly explains. “We give a lot of tours for people who have never been here before even though they’ve driven right past it!”
