Arcadia has rural vibes and abundant nature along the Erie Canal

Surrounded by farmland and scenic views, Arcadia includes the village of Newark and the hamlets of Fairville, Marbletown, Hydesville and Mud Mills. Overall, the community is home to about 15,000 people, of which nearly 10,000 live in Newark. “We’re not far from Rochester or Syracuse, so I imagine a lot of people who live here now either commute to Rochester or Syracuse,” says Sheryl VanGee, who retired as the town's deputy clerk. The area has strong manufacturing and agricultural industries, with employers like Fold-Pak Corporation, IEC Electronics and Hallagan Manufacturing, as well as numerous orchards, farmers markets and agritourism destinations. “We’re not far from Lake Ontario and we’re not far from the Finger Lakes, which have a lot of wineries,” says VanGee, an area native. “I like the people and the sense of the community, and just the beauty.”

Historic and midcentury homes line Newark’s residential streets

Arcadia housing stock features a mix of historic and midcentury styles, including Victorian, American Foursquare and National-style homes alongside Cape Cods, Colonial Revivals, ranch-style homes and split-levels built after the 1950s. In Newawk, East Avenue and Maple Avenue have historic districts with spacious lots and larger homes that reflect the area’s architectural heritage. Fixer-uppers and mobile homes can range from $15,000 to $100,000, but most turnkey homes sell for $100,000 to $300,000, depending on size, age and condition. Larger homes and country properties on multiple acres can cost between $300,000 and $450,000.

Biking and boating along the Erie Canal and nearby lakes

Residents enjoy easy access to the Finger Lakes, Lake Ontario, and Brantling Ski and Snowboard Center. Zurich Bog, a designated National Natural Landmark, invites hikers to explore trails with views of wetlands, bogs and native orchids. The Erie Canalway Trail, part of the Empire State Trail, provides a picturesque route for biking and cross-country skiing. Newark also has numerous parks with sports fields, playground equipment and open green space. The Port of Newark at T. Spencer Knight Park features a visitor’s center, picnic tables and a gazebo along the canal, all just a short walk from the downtown district. “The Erie Canal runs through town and there’s always some boaters,” VanGee says. “People go fishing, kayaking and anything you’d want to do on the water.”

College credit available at Newark Central School District

Many students attend Newark Central School District, which has about 2,000 students across three elementary schools, one middle school and one high school. The district receives an overall C grade from Niche. Newark High School offers Advanced Placement and dual-credit classes, career pathways, and pre-engineering and biomedical science programs. Newark also has a branch of Finger Lakes Community College.

Newark offers groceries and casual dining, but limited retail

Most shopping and dining options are concentrated in the village of Newark, including grocery stores like Wegmans. Local spots in downtown Newark range from Grind-On Coffee Company and breakfast at Canal View Restaurant, to craft brews at Runaway Blue Brewing Company and pub fare at Parker’s Grille and Tap House. Most folks leave town for retail shopping. “We go to Eastview [Mall] or the Finger Lakes Premium Outlets, or other places like Canadaigua,” VanGee says, all of which are within a 30-minute drive of Newark. She adds that “There are a lot of apple growers around here,” including The Apple Shed. “They have a lot of apples and baked goods and different things.” The Finger Lakes region is also known for its wineries, such as Belhurst Castle and Winery and Ventosa Vineyards, about 20 miles away.

Drivers can get to Rochester and Syracuse in an hour or less

State Route 31 offers a straightforward commute to Rochester roughly 30 miles away. Syracuse is about 60 miles away on Interstate 90. Medical care is available at Newark-Wayne Community Hospital. Bikers can hop on the Erie Canalway Trail, which stretches from Buffalo to Albany across 360 miles of mostly paved, off-road trails. The canalway trail is the east-west portion of the Empire State Trail, a sprawling 750-mile path throughout New York.

Seasonal events celebrate music and agriculture

Newark hosts events throughout the year, such as a farmers market downtown from mid-June to October and Music on the Erie, a free summer concert series on Friday nights. Events like the annual Wine, Craft Beverage and Artisans Festival and Taste of Wayne County highlight the region’s growers, makers and restaurateurs. Arcadia is also known as the birthplace of the Spiritualism movement. In 1848, Margaretta and Kate Fox claimed they communicated with spirits in their Hydesville home, sparking a new religious movement that cast its eerie glow across the U.S. and Europe. Decades later, Margaretta confessed it was all a hoax, yet Spiritualism prevailed. Today, the Newark Arcadia Historical Society Museum has a permanent exhibition dedicated to the sisters and Spiritualism.
