A walkable district in a Northern California college town
Located in the heart of Arcata, Downtown-Uniontown is where locals can be seen dining on outdoor patios, strolling through local parks and thrifting at vintage boutiques. The district is often bustling with college students, longtime residents and visitors, especially during events like the Arcata Farmer’s Market or the Arcata Bay Oyster Festival. “The number-one thing about downtown is its walkability. You can walk to the farmer’s market. You can walk 10 minutes in one direction and be in a beautiful redwood forest and walk the other way to bayside walking trails. You get this really good feeling of being in a small town with all the amenities you need, but you’re surrounded by nature,” says Realtor Bryn Coriell of Coldwell Banker Sellers Realty, a longtime resident. Arcata is also home to California State Polytechnic University, Humboldt, the region’s only major college. “The university is a big influence. It has really shaped the culture in Arcata as a hub for music, arts and academics, and it basically doubles the town’s population every fall,” Coriell says.

Arcata Plaza shopping and dining
Downtown-Uniontown is centered around Arcata Plaza, a town square with lawns, flowers and benches that is bordered by shops, restaurants and bars in century-old storefronts. Much of the architecture traces back to the Victorian era, with colorful, decorative trim, bay windows and ornamental features. Locals can stop by second-hand shops like Vintage Avenger, browse the vinyl at People’s Records and pick up gifts at Humboldt Outfitters. Coffee shops like Café Brio and Jitter Bean Coffee Co. are popular places for morning meetups, while local spots like Richards’ Goat Tavern & Tea Room and The Local Cider Bar bring out the college crowd in the evenings. Groceries are close to home at North Coast Co-Op and Wildberries Marketplace.

Farmers’ Markets and annual events
Local farmers, vendors and artisans flock to Arcata Plaza every Saturday for the Arcata Farmers’ Market. Roads are closed to vehicles while visitors meander through the square, picking up fresh produce and snacks along the way. The Plaza also plays host to the annual Summer Music and Arts festival and the Arcata Bay Oyster Festival, both in June. Just a few blocks away is the Arcata Ball Park, home of the Humboldt Crabs collegiate summer baseball team.
Indoor sports and walks to the redwoods
The Arcata Sports Complex, Arcata Community Park and HealthSPORT indoor fitness gym occupy the eastern edge of the neighborhood. Situated right next to one another, these three facilities are a community gathering place that has playgrounds, soccer fields and baseball diamonds. Less than a mile away, locals hike and bike at Redwood Park, where rugged trails wind through a landscape brimming with massive redwood trees. It also has a disc golf course, a playground and basketball courts.

Eclectic, century-old homes
Downtown-Uniontown has a mix of older home styles on a traditional, flat street grid that extends out from the Plaza’s shops and restaurants. These homes were largely built in the late 1800s and early 1900s and includes bungalows, cottages, Victorians and Craftsman styles. “It’s a really unique mix of homes. Zoning and building codes weren’t implemented in Humboldt County until the 1960s, so there’s a lot of creative construction,” Coriell says. Small lots are the norm here, but there’s still plenty of room for landscaping or a small garden. Prices range from $350,000 to $600,000, depending on the size and condition of the home.
