A connected but slightly rural suburb
Ready Crossing sits on the border of Alabama and Tennessee, and as the name hints at, the area’s history is centered on a railroad that crossed state lines. Today, there’s still an element of motion around Ready Crossing, especially with Route 53 passing through and Interstate 65 so close by. Not only do these transportation amenities put Ready Crossing within reach of downtown centers —it’s about 17 miles to Athens— but it also helps residents explore the wider region. As a result, Ready Crossing is fairly suburban, even though it trades out density in favor of more rural features like wide open spaces.

Brick ranches galore, with Craftsman leanings
Housing in Ready Crossing is predominantly made of brick in all colors, from red to tan to white, giving a sturdy, consistent and classic quality to the neighborhood. Prices are generally in the mid $200,000s to low $300,000s. Ranches are a common style, but even then, the modern look of homes in Ready Crossing stretches that genre to new dimensions. Instead of low slung, flat-roofed ranches, homebuyers are more likely to see sprawling ranches with multiple gables and covered front porches with columns. At some levels, the homes are developed enough in style to lean almost Craftsman, especially when they become multiple stories. Ready Crossing has a neat grid of streets, and residential layouts look quintessentially suburban with their neat front lawns, ornamental shrubs, clean sidewalks and fenced backyards. Ensconced in this environment, it’s sometimes easy to forget that just beyond the homes are pastures, horses, hay bales and cotton fields.
