Townhouses, condos and apartments in the fit city of Arlington
Buckingham is a neighborhood of townhouses near the center of Arlington. Brick multi-unit buildings with shuttered windows line the residential streets of this area right outside of Washington, D.C. People park on the streets or in designated spots outside their units and hop on North Glebe Road to reach the center of Arlington in less than five minutes. Arlington is known for its highly educated population that makes being healthy a priority. “It’s a very fit city in terms of health. A lot of people are into their physique,” says Josh Bell, managing partner and Realtor at Liton Properties based in D.C.

Arlington’s commercial center is right next to Buckingham. The Ballston Quarter mall sits across busy North Glebe Road from the neighborhood and has several restaurants, including bartaco and Punch Bowl Social, a Southern-style gastropub. Virtual reality games are played at Immersive Gamebox, and kids take martial arts lessons at Leo Dalla Brazilian jiujitsu. The Washington Capitals practice at MedStar Capitals Iceplex, which also offers skating classes for kids and open skating for the public. Near the mall are fitness businesses like Orangetheory Fitness, CorePower Yoga and F45 Training, plus quick service restaurants like Shake Shack and CAVA. Chain stores like Target, Harris Teeter and CVS sit along Glebe Road. “Arlington has been the cool place to live for a while now,” says Lana Africano, Realtor with Compass Real Estate in nearby Alexandria.
Mostly renters in this Arlington neighborhood, plus a Catholic church
Buckingham is mostly townhouses, condo buildings and apartments. The neighborhood developed in the late 1930s as a place for affordable middle-income housing, and its design followed garden-style principles like curved streets and well-kept common green areas. About three-quarters of residents here rent their homes. The high-rise Hyde Park Condos have balconies, exterior lighting and a community pool, plus association fees that cover air conditioning and snow removal. Low-rise condos in Arlington Oaks have water, snow removal and heat included in association fees, and woods in their backyard. High-rise condos can go for about $500,000, low-rise units can cost $250,000 and townhouses built in 2012 can cost $1.2 million. Single-family homes like colonials and custom builds costing $1 million or more sit in the northwest corner of the neighborhood. The Catholic Diocese of Arlington keeps its headquarters in Buckingham. The Cathedral of St. Thomas More and its nearby school sit within the neighborhood.

The park connects to a trail with the same name, which runs through the woods past an amphitheater and a picnic area.
