Cherrydale

Cherrydale's parks rest in residents' backyards
Cherrydale is home to Hidden Pond, a green space with foliage, several benches, and a quaint, emerald-tinted pond where you can skip rocks. Custis Trail, a paved path for hiking and biking, cuts through Hidden Pond, and locals can take it to parks across Arlington, even as far as Theodore Roosevelt Island, 3 miles away. Cherry Valley Park is much more lowkey, a green field surrounded by trees and encircled by homes, a small outdoor getaway for a picnic or a game of catch in residents' backyards on North Pollard Street and North Nelson Street. Oak Grove Park is another neighborhood space with a playground for kids and a full soccer field, with a paved loop trail making a circle around the whole park.Beloved older bungalows, with new constructions on the market
Regarding Cherrydale’s housing, Wisley says, “It’s been getting pricey, most new constructions are on the upper side of 2 million. It’s very sought after but even small homes run about 1.5 million.” The home values in Cherrydale range from $300,000 to $375,000 for a high-rise condo around 1,000 square feet, while single-family homes range from $1 million to over $2.6 million, varying by age, square footage and remodel status. Walking down the streets of Cherrydale reveal American foursquares and bungalows with pops of color on their exteriors, like blue or red shutters, mainly the older bungalows from the ‘20s and ‘30s. Many of these homes came from Sears catalogs back in the day and were considered stylish almost a century ago. Wisley even mentions that “The older homes tend to remain. People have respect for them and want to keep the culture of the community. The homes being torn down are the ones that were built in the 60s and 70s, the styles are more obsolete than the much older homes.” The older bungalows typically have two to three bedrooms and smaller yards, making upkeep easier and a good opportunity for first-time home buyers. “This neighborhood is perfect for starter homes; you have a smaller home size and all the walkability that young couples or recent graduates buying their first home might enjoy.” says Cabell Fooshe, an Arlington local Realtor with Keller Williams. The higher end of the price range hosts bigger and more modern-style new construction builds, which are popping up throughout the neighborhood for those looking for proximity to DC and the shopping in Arlington but wanting more space and modern conveniences, like upgraded appliances and open-floor plans.Langston Boulevard has shopping within minutes of home
Stop by Safeway on the other side of Langston Boulevard to pick up groceries. Northern Virginia’s diversity creates a rich tapestry of dining establishments that are hard to find elsewhere. Less than 2 miles east of Cherrydale is Heidelberg Pastry Shoppe, a German bakery that has been serving cakes, bread and chocolate eclairs since 1975. The neighborhood has Bostan Uyghur Cuisine, serving authentic Uyghur dishes, like beef and lamb kebabs and spicy saozi noodles.Arlington Public Schools come highly-rated
Arlington Public Schools covers the Cherrydale neighborhood for education. Students can head to Glebe Elementary School to the west, which has an overall A-rating by Niche. There’s also Dorothy Hamm Middle School and Washington-Liberty High School, both boasting A-plus ratings on Niche. Washington-Liberty is about a mile south of Cherrydale and has been an Arlington institution educating the city’s youth since 1925.Several houses of worship within Cherrydale's limits
Several older churches still hold services throughout Cherrydale, from Restoration Anglican Church to St. Agnes Catholic Church, which also hosts the private St. Agnes School and Cherrydale Bible Church. These houses of worship regularly host events for gardening, food drives and denominational education, and all three have been in the community for over 50 years.Walk to Clarendon metro or drive to DC in 5 miles
The Clarendon metro station runs along the Orange and Silver lines and is less than a mile’s walk from Cherrydale’s residential streets. Locals can take the train to access points of interest across D.C., Maryland and northern Virginia. “People from Cherrydale spend less time in their car. Commuting is a huge issue, and these residents have their solution,” says Fooshe. At Arlington’s Five Points, residents can quickly drive to the shops and restaurants along Langston Boulevard, commute to DC along U.S. Route 29 in under 5 miles, or head to Washington-Liberty High on a straight shot down North Quincy Street. To the south of the neighborhood, a 9-mile drive along Interstate 66 leads to Tysons Corner Center, the biggest mall in the D.C.-Baltimore area.
