The Air Force Memorial is located in Foxcroft Heights across from the Pentagon.
A walk to Fort Myer, the Pentagon, or the Air Force Memorial
Foxcroft Heights is a small-scale community of midcentury suburban homes along a half-mile stretch of land below the nationally famed Arlington National Cemetery. The Fort Myer military base is on the neighborhood's north side. It sits beneath the shadow of the Sheraton Pentagon City Hotel directly to the west, with the soaring spires of the Air Force Memorial to the east and Interstate 395 marking its southern edge. "It's always been known by folks in Arlington as a wonderful commuter area," Barbara Johnson, an associate broker with Long & Foster Real Estate, says. "It's the last residential neighborhood along the Columbia Pike corridor, just one mile to Penrose, and one mile to Pentagon City's metro station and shopping center."
Compact suburban midcentury homes line Foxcroft Heights
Home values range from $625,000 to $1.3 million, varying by remodel status and square footage. Foxcroft Heights' residential area consists of three one-block streets lined mainly with Cape Cod homes and cottages with low-slung roofs built in the late 1930s and early '40s or unique Tudor Revival duplexes and townhouses. A few Contemporary-style homes and the small, brick Foxcroft Terrace apartment complex are the only exceptions. With homes placed close together with narrow lots on uniform streets, the vibe is intimate but friendly. Most homes feature front yards decorated by flowering bushes and trees, as well as open porches that invite neighborly chit-chat. Johnson notes that the housing stock is helpful for buyers seeking "starter homes and investment opportunities; Fort Myer is behind it, so it [also] serves a role for military folks or anyone needing to move to D.C. quick."

Foxcroft Heights Park is a great place to hang out after work.
Foxcroft Heights' Civil War history
Foxcroft Heights was once a community for African Americans who had escaped slavery during the Civil War. Known then as "Freedman's Village," it was run by the Federal Government. Like Arlington National Cemetery to the north, it was built on the land that was previously Robert E. Lee's home and plantation. One of Freedman's Village's residents was Sojourner Truth, the renowned abolitionist and activist. Foxcroft Heights Park today dedicates a historical plaque and bridge to the legacy of Freedman's Village.
Arlington National Cemetery is a street away
Arlington National Cemetery is the nation's largest military cemetery, serving as the final resting place for over 400,000 servicemembers across over 600 acres of land. Folks often visit the gravesites of Presidents like John F. Kennedy and William H. Taft. Every Memorial Day, there are festivities, the president makes an address, and the 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment places flags along the headstones. Arlington National has begun an expansion project to ensure the cemetery will have capacity well into the coming decades, using the land directly east of Foxcroft Heights. The expansion is part of the Columbia Pike Realignment Project to create a new multi-use trail for bikers and pedestrians along the cemetery's edge. "The Columbia Pike Realignment Project started many years ago; they've put in a new road called South Nash Street," says Johnson. She adds that "with the expansion of the cemetery, the walkability [of Foxcroft Heights] is going to increase considerably over the next year or two."
Foxcroft Heights residents can serve up some fun at Towers Park with a game of tennis.
Towers Park is in neighboring Penrose
Foxcroft Heights Park is the neighborhood's only green space, with a playground for children and picnic tables for after-play snacks. Towers Park is less than a mile west across Washington Boulevard and offers a larger playground, courts for tennis, basketball and sand volleyball, picnic tables and a dog park for pups to play in. Prospect Hill Park is across the I-395 interchange and features hillside views of the Air Force Memorial and the D.C. skyline.
Pentagon City for retail, while Dama Restaurant has Ethiopian cuisine
Foxcroft Heights has only one restaurant within its borders, though it offers two atmospheres: Dama Restaurant and Dama Pastry & Café. The restaurant has served Ethiopian dishes for over 20 years, like Awaze Tibs—beef or lamb with sautéed onions, jalapeños and hot chili paste. The pastry shop in the same building offers cakes, traditional East African pastries and cookies. Both the restaurant and pastry shop offer vegan and vegetarian options. A mile south of the neighborhood are the large shopping centers of National Landing, Pentagon City and Crystal City. Johnson says, "With National Landing [recently] developed by JBG Smith, restaurants, parks and venues are more accessible than they used to be. It's a nice corridor for people here to explore." These centers are mixed-use, with high-rise condos above name-brand retailers and fast-casual dining options. Folks can browse Macy's and Nordstrom and grab a bite at regional chains like Lebanese Taverna and Hangry Joe's for chicken sandwiches. The next-door neighborhood of Penrose has a Giant for groceries, and National Landing has a Harris Teeter.

Foxcroft Heights is nearby the Pentagon City metro station.
One of Virginia's closest neighborhoods to D.C.
Foxcroft Heights residents are bordered by major roads to the south, including Columbia Pike, Washington Boulevard and Interstate 395, so driving is the most popular way to get around. The neighborhood is directly next to the Pentagon, separated only by highways, and the entrance gates of Fort Myer sit just across Southgate Road for major military and government employees. Pentagon City also hosts the Amazon Headquarters and several other Fortune 500 company office buildings. Folks can take the Pentagon City metro station into D.C. or Maryland, just a mile away from home. Johnson notes that "folks who live on Columbia Pike have a shorter commute than anybody else, even people living in Crystal City or National Landing." Downtown D.C.'s employers, retail and attractions are 5 miles away along Columbia Pike or Arlington Boulevard, and Foxcroft Heights is about as close as Virginia locals can get to living in D.C., as far as being close to downtown.
