Self-contained Arlington neighborhood
Glebewood is an Arlington, Virginia, neighborhood limited on living space but big on convenience. The cluster of about 150 homes 7 miles from Washington, D.C., is dominated by townhouses. Homeowners may give up yard space or an extra bedroom, but they’re within a 10-minute walk of eateries, parks and a gym. And that’s not necessarily the case for other neighborhoods on the sprawling north side of Arlington. “Most people drive here [in Arlington],” confirms Ann-Marie Turnage, manager of Heidelberg Pastry Shoppe in the area. However, Glebewood residents benefit from a different sort of lifestyle. They can traverse their self-contained community on foot rather than worrying about dealing with traffic.
Walk to a bar, bakery
Homeowners can walk to a couple of businesses in the neighborhood. Cowboy Cafe is known for its Southwestern menu, late-night bar and snug parking area where fender-benders aren’t uncommon. Nearby Heidelberg Pastry Shoppe sells German sweets to politicians and decades-long regulars. Opened in 1975, the bakery provided birthday and anniversary cakes for U.S. Sen. Bob Dole for years. “We now serve our original customers’ grandchildren,” says Turnage. “People come after they move away, especially at the holidays when they’re back home. We see a lot of our previous customers coming to get their childhood memories.” Within a mile on Langston Boulevard, the road that runs along the northern edge of the neighborhood, people can reach pharmacies, Ace Hardware or Harris Teeter supermarket. They also live within half a mile of medical services at VHC Health.
Vintage Colonial-style townhouses
Glebewood consists of a handful of streets, and most are bordered by townhouses that date as far back as the 1930s. The majority were built in the colonial style, with dormer windows protruding above brick and stone that make up the ground levels. A two-bedroom townhouse can cost around $700,000, while a four-bedroom townhouse sells for $1 million. On the south end, Cape Cod and Tudor Revival homes provide single-family living with small yards. Prices for move-in-ready houses vary from $1.1 million to $1.4 million.
Glebe Elementary students blend art and science
Children can attend Arlington Public Schools, starting with the neighborhood’s Glebe Elementary School. Students take part in smART projects that blend science, math and art. For example, second graders in the past created a dance performance inspired by the life cycles of frogs and butterflies. Kids can advance from Glebe Elementary to Swanson Middle School; Niche gives both schools grades of A. Yorktown High School, which offers 35 Advanced Placement courses, gets an A-plus.
Bordering Langston-Brown and Slater parks
Residents on the north end live within a third of a mile of Langston-Brown Park. The unshaded park is home to a colorful playground called Strawberry Cottage, as well as tennis courts and a half-basketball court. Next door, Langston-Brown Community Center lets people drop in and use its indoor basketball court for free, while selling memberships for its fitness center. On the south side, Slater Park’s amenities are limited to a small playground, but its shaded landscape is better suited for walks and picnics. Homes are a short walk from Capital Life Church and Mount Salvation Baptist Church; the latter’s congregation has been worshiping since the late 1800s.
Athletes travel for Summer Slam Fitness Competition
Patriot CrossFit in the center of Glebewood hosts one of the metro’s biggest fitness events. Since 2022, 144 athletes have competed annually in August’s Summer Slam Fitness Competition. Teams come from as far away as Massachusetts and Tennessee to face off. Residents live within 2 miles of the Ballston neighborhood, where Quarterfest Crawl is held every May. A street becomes an open-air pub as attendees sample dozens of restaurants, and DJs and guitarists play around the neighborhood.
Take I-66 to Washington, D.C.
It’s less than a mile to Interstate 66, which leads to Washington, D.C. The commute to the district is less than 10 miles, but it may take as long as 45 minutes. Alternatively, residents can drive to the Ballston-MU Metro station less than 2 miles away. Passengers can catch the train there and arrive in Washington, D.C., in less than 20 minutes.
