Quaint residential area, and one of Arlington's oldest neighborhoods
Glencarlyn stands as Arlington's oldest planned community and one of the oldest in the country, as developers originally plotted the area in 1887. Walking around Glencarlyn reveals subtle reminders of the enduring strength of the community at almost every turn, from historical markers that recount stories of the past to carefully preserved monuments and volunteer-driven gardens. Online, residents have laid out detailed self-guided walking tours of significant sights and decades of history have been logged from Glencarlyn's beginnings. At the same time, monthly newsletters and updates from the Glencarlyn Civic Association keep everyone current. Donna Paton, principal broker with Paton Real Estate LLC, says, "It's a very unique community with beautiful parks close to home. There's a historic residence there that's interesting and popular. It comes from one of the neighborhood's founders. Each house is unique, and it's close to everything in Arlington."
Most of the neighborhood streets end at Glencarlyn Park
Glencarlyn Park is the highlight of the neighborhood, "There's a small creek there where people love to take their dogs or their kids," Realtor Claudia Webb of The Mike Webb Team at RE/MAX Allegiance says. "There are some nice barbecues during that time of the year there." Nature lovers will find themselves at home at the Long Branch Nature Center, which hosts various programming for all ages. Trails here connect to Glencarlyn Park, featuring a playground, pavilions and public barbecues, and trails along Four Mile Run, a small creek. One of the park's trails is the massive Washington & Old Dominion Trail, which runs 45 miles across northern Virginia. Just north of Glencarlyn is the larger Bluemont Park, with a playground for kids, a picnic pavilion and a disc golf course. This park also has access to the Four Mile Run Trail, which runs through numerous parks throughout Arlington.
Midcentury Colonial Revivals and original colonial farmhouses
The neighborhood's streets were laid out to encourage getting out and seeing the neighbors. "Most of the streets take you to Glencarlyn Park, and you can go down there and have a barbecue and walk the dog," Webb says . "That's one of the things that people like about the neighborhood." Home values in Glencarlyn range from $850,000 to over $1.85 million based on age, condition and square footage. "You can find a small rambler, you can find a Cape Cod, you can find a colonial, you can find one that was just extended," Webb says. Lots are on the smaller side, and though garages are difficult to find, there are plenty of trees, well-maintained garden beds, and a white picket fence or two. Paton mentions, "One of the houses there is from 1870, but newer ones are from the 1940s and 1950s," Much of Glencarlyn's housing stock comes from the post-World War II expansion that blossomed northern Virginia into the massive metropolitan region it is today. However, occasional historic homes are preserved by the city and the Glencarlyn Civic Association. The oldest house in Glencarlyn is also the oldest house in the city of Arlington. The Ball-Sellers house on 3rd Street South is a rare example of an actual colonial farmhouse, as it was built sometime in the 1750s and is now a museum open to the public.
Centralized to NOVA shopping centers in Seven Corners or Bailey's Crossroads
Residents have shopping and dining options in almost any direction outside the neighborhood, keeping things convenient and quiet on their home turf. Take Arlington Boulevard a mile and a half west to reach Target, Safeway, and Home Depot. South of Glencarlyn is Bailey's Crossroads, with options to shop at an ALDI or Giant for groceries and Old Navy and Home Goods for retail. Locally loved eateries in Bailey's Crossroads reflect the diversity of northern Virginia, with Edy's Chicken and Steak serving Peruvian-style pollo a la brasa and platanos or Haifa Grill for chicken and lamb shawarma.
Arlington Public Schools have several options within a 5-mile radius of home
Kids in the neighborhood attend Arlington Public Schools, such as Carlin Springs Elementary School, rated a C-plus on Niche; Kenmore Middle School, rated a B-plus; and Washington Liberty High School, rated a stellar A-plus by Niche, and ranked No. 7 in the state for Best Public High School Teachers.
The community gets together for Glencarlyn Days
Once a year, the neighborhood gets together for Glencarlyn Days, a weekend full of food, home tours, garden tours, children's activities, and a parade. Carlin Hall Community Center, an Arts and Crafts-style building on the National Register of Historic Places, marks the central point of the neighborhood. Webb adds, "They have a nice library within the neighborhood where they do a lot of community stuff, and they have a community garden group as well." Glencarlyn Library is next to Carlin Hall and hosts monthly events, from storytime for toddlers to test prep for locals taking the U.S. Citizenship exam and informal English conversation classes for new language learners.
Take Arlington Boulevard to D.C in minutes
U.S. Route 50, also called Arlington Boulevard, is Glencarlyn's main commuter road. It serves as the neighborhood's northern border and can take residents to Downtown D.C. in 7 miles or Ronald Reagan Airport in 6. Since Glencarlyn is connected to Washington & Old Dominion Trail, biking or long-distance walking to Alexandria or much of Arlington is smoother. A WMATA bus runs down Arlington Boulevard and has a couple of stops in Glencarlyn for public bus access through the city.
