High rises across the Potomac River from Georgetown

Located across the Potomac River from Georgetown, North Highland is an active Arlington neighborhood of high rises, townhouses and single-family homes. People exercise along a wooded nature trail and ride their bikes across the bridge to D.C. on the weekends. “You can see the Georgetown crew team going out all the time on the D.C. side,” says Nick Africano, licensed real estate agent at Compass in nearby Alexandria. “It’s a very active area where a lot of people go running.”

Single-family homes and condos near Georgetown

North Highland has a mixture of condos, townhouses and apartment communities on grassy suburban streets. Single-family homes like brick Cape Cods and bungalows sit behind wooden fences on quarter-acre lots. Many residential properties have the forest as their backyard. Prices range from $205,000 for a condo unit from the 1940s to $1.7 million for a townhouse facing the park. About 70% of North Highland residents rent their homes.

Walking trails and parks near the Potomac

Hugging the Potomac is Fort Bennett Park, an 11-acre green space with a nature trail snaking through the woods and benches for relaxation. Through the trees is a walking trail along the river with views of nearby Georgetown. People walk across the bridge to the District on nice days and take their kids to the playground at Dawson Terrace Park on the weekends. It’s near the Dawson Terrace Community Center, which hosts classes for kids in martial arts.

The New Orleans-inspired Bayou Bakery, Coffee Bar & Eatery serves lattes and beignets, and trendy Sushi Rock has live music, cocktails and steamed buns. “I have a couple moving from Navy Yard to Arlington and they say it’s the cleanest, best place, with tons of things to do and it’s vibrant and safe,” says Africano. “I have friends who live there too. There’s a lot to do, with nothing to worry about.” North Highland scores a 3 out of 10 on the CAP Index, which measures crime and safety. That’s below the national CAP Index score of 4.
