Variety of housing styles near D.C. and the Pentagon
Penrose, an Arlington neighborhood about 3 miles west of Washington, D.C., is attractive for military families or those who want an easy commute to the nation’s capital. The community is home to the Naval Support Facility Arlington and less than 2 miles from the Pentagon, the Pentagon City Metro station and the Foreign Service Institute. But with a variety of housing options – homes on quiet streets, contemporary townhouses and apartments above businesses – a top-rated school district and parks that support both active and passive recreation, this is a place where people can settle. “It’s very safe with a convenient commute to D.C.,” Realtor Josh Bell with Keller Williams Commercial explains. “A lot of major driving routes go through the area and there are numerous Metro stops nearby.”
Penrose and Towers parks and Arlington National Cemetery
Parks in Penrose accommodate all kinds of outdoor experiences. Penrose Park has a 2-acre green space and many amenities, including a playground, basketball and tennis courts, picnic shelters and paved walking trails. Towers Park is well-maintained and spans 4 acres. There are four tennis courts, a sand volleyball court, a basketball court and a playground. Neighbors can come together at the park’s dog park or community garden. Arlington National Cemetery is less than a mile away. While it is largely reserved for veterans and military families to memorialize their loved ones, a visitor’s area and tours are available for those interested in viewing the grounds. “A lot of tourists visit to spend time honoring troops or enjoying the view,” Bell explains. “There are a variety of areas for people to take in the park.”
Updated 20th-century homes, new builds, townhouses and apartments
Penrose’s residential roads are walkable, with a slight grid pattern and cracked concrete sidewalks. Early 1900s Cape Cods and brick Colonial Revivals sit beside recently built New Traditional or Craftsman-style homes. Some older properties have been updated with fresh coats of paint and new windowpanes. But all homes share the same neat, square lots. Potential homebuyers can find a single-family home from $600,000 to $1.8 million, depending on size, age and condition. Townhouses are also available, most resembling attached colonial-style properties and typically costing between $550,000 and $900,000. Many Penrose residents rent, and apartment buildings sit along Columbia Pike and around 2nd Street.
Parks
The neighborhood is zoned for Arlington County Public Schools, a district with an A-plus grade that's ranked the No. 2 Best School District in Virginia by Niche. Students in Penrose can attend Alice West Fleet Elementary School, which gets an A from Niche, before Jefferson Middle School, which receives an A-minus. Students may graduate from Wakefield High School, which gets an A-minus and offers National Honor Society, Model U.N, Future Business Leaders of America and many other nationally recognized programs.
Shopping and dining along Columbia Pike
Bell notes that Arlington is changing; more young people are moving in due to its proximity to D.C. and the nightlife that has made its way to this side of the Potomac River. Penrose has adapted to these new demographics with mixed-use facilities and trendy eateries. Columbia Pike encompasses the neighborhood’s southern boundary, where businesses sit beneath apartment complexes and stand-alone restaurants and retailers line the streets. Residents can grocery shop at Giant Food or eat out at one of the many restaurants. Popular spots include Sabores Tapas Bar, a recently opened spot that has since become a local staple, serving food from various Latin American countries and offering Saturday and Sunday bottomless brunch, and William Jeffery’s Tavern, where the menu includes upscale pub fare and plenty of beer on tap. For dessert, there’s Acme Pie Company. Visitors come for the creative pie selections but stay for the pinball machines lining the wall.
3 miles to Washington, D.C.
Located less than 2 miles from the Pentagon, the Foreign Service Institute, Pentagon City and the Pentagon City Metro station, this neighborhood is attractive for military families and commuters into the nation’s capital, 3 miles east. To get around Arlington, D.C. and the rest of the DMV, Washington Boulevard, which connects to Columbia Pike and U.S. Interstate 395, cuts through the neighborhood. And when it’s time to fly, the Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport is about 3 miles south.

They're more police than we need in Arlington. Within 18 miles we have over 300 police officers so it's really common to see multiple people getting pulled over for speeding or violating a traffic law on the way home.
