Rock Spring
Large houses on large lots
Rock Spring was largely developed in the 1940s with “really nice houses for big government officials at the time,” says Twigg. Many of these original homes still exist today, though several have been replaced by newer builds. “There were a lot of estates around there that might have had one house on it that, over the years, has been subdivided into six or so big houses around it,” Twigg says. Homes built within the last 10 years include modern and Craftsman-inspired new traditional styles, often spanning over 5,000 square feet. These spacious homes typically cost $2.2 million to north of $2.8 million. Original brick ranches, split levels and colonial revival homes built between the 1940s and ‘60s still exist in the neighborhood today, and many of them have newer additions and renovations. These houses typically span less than 3,000 square feet and sit on quarter-acre lots, costing between $1 million and $1.6 million.Arlington Public Schools within walking distance
Students in Rock Spring typically attend either Jamestown Elementary School or Discovery Elementary School, both earning A grades from Niche. Discovery Elementary School opened in 2015 in a new, net-carbon-zero building featuring rooftop solar panels . Older students progress to A-rated Williamsburg Middle School, on the same campus as Discovery Elementary, and A-plus-rated Yorktown High School. Yorktown High School was rated the top high school for STEM in Arlington County, and the school offers a three-year science research program, technology courses with work and internship opportunities, and STEM Clubs for students. All four schools are within walking distance for most students living in the neighborhood. Marymount University, a private Catholic institution with about 4,000 students, is just east of Rock Spring.Potomac Overlook Park and Washington Country Club
Kids play ball on the weekends at Jamestown Park, where the hills are perfect for sledding in the winter. Neighbors can also walk along the creek at Rock Spring Park, a small park on the neighborhood's south end. Potomac Overlook Regional Park is about 3 miles east for a larger park option. Situated on 67 acres, this park has hiking trails where visitors can catch views of the Potomac River. It also has a nature center and interpretive gardens. Washington Golf and Country Club is just east of Rock Spring. Presidents Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson were members, and the so-called “Club of Presidents” remains a popular spot for diplomats and officials. The private club has an 18-hole golf course, tennis courts and a swimming pool. "If you're devoted to golfing, you would go there, but it's not for everybody," Twigg says.
Cherrydale Farmers Market and Rock Spring Garden Club
The Cherrydale Farmers Market, about 3 miles southeast of Rock Spring, hosts local farmers and artisans each Saturday morning at the Dorothy Hamm Middle School Campus. Community members can also join the Rock Spring Garden Club, which meets regularly and hosts flower shows, monthly speakers and events like holiday tea in December. Residents are also just a few miles from some of Arlington's largest events, such as the annual Arlington County Fair in August and the Arlington Festival of the Arts in April.Shopping and dining just outside Rock Spring

Residents are a quick drive from the entertainment and nightlife in Ballston and Clarendon. Favorite spots include Galaxy Hut, a quirky bar with karaoke nights, and First Down, a casual sports bar on Wilson Boulevard. Rock Spring Congregational United Church of Christ is the only church within Rock Spring's boundaries. This progressive church, which is still active today, was founded in 1912 and was heavily involved in efforts to racially integrate Arlington in the 1950s and advocate for gay rights in the church through the 1990s.Quick drives to the National Mall
Rock Spring is about 6 miles northwest of the National Mall. The park is 10 minutes away by car without traffic via Glebe Road and Interstate 66. Public transit in the neighborhood is limited, but locals can drive or take the 53B bus from the Williamsburg Blvd and Old Dominion Drive stop to the East Falls Church Metro station. The ART 72 route through Arlington Transit takes riders through Arlington from Rock Spring to Ballston and Shirlington. Ronald Reagan National Airport is about 9 miles southeast.
