Tara-Leeway Heights

Colonials, Cape Cods, Tudors and ramblers
Betsy Twigg, Associate Broker with McEnearney Associates, explains that Tara was first established as a custom-built neighborhood between the 1930s and 50s, while Leeway Heights was primarily red brick colonial tract housing built after World War II. The original homes on the Leeway Heights side tend to be more uniform, while homes on the Tara side include a mix of styles such as Cape Cod, Tudors and ramblers. "Some of the original houses have been torn down, and new houses have gone up, which is pretty common in Arlington, though not so much in Tara," Twigg says. She also explains that new additions to original homes are also common. Although both sides of the neighborhood attract wealthy homeowners, Tara's custom homes have garnered a particularly prestigious reputation. "The [Leeway Heights] neighborhood is very nice now, but it doesn't have the tree-lined, hilly landscape Tara does," Twigg says. Home prices in Tara-Leeway Heights can range from about $1 million for a small ranch or cottage up to $2 million for a new build, and homes have small lots lining wide streets with plenty of room for street parking.Arlington Schools earn A's
Arlington Public Schools serves the neighborhood and is rated A+ and No. 2 by Niche in Best School Districts in Virginia. Many students attend either Glebe Elementary School, which earns an A grade from Niche, or Cardinal Elementary School, which opened in 2021 and is not yet rated by Niche. Older students progress to the A-rated Swanson Middle School or A-plus-rated Yorktown High School. Yorktown High School's club options include Model United Nations, Women in STEM, Engineering Club and the American Sign Language Honor Society.Parkhurst Park, Lacey Woods Park and more
Tara-Leeway Heights has several parks nearby, and mature shade trees throughout the area help regulate hot summer weather. Families gather at Parkhurst Park, just outside the neighborhood on 20th Street. Younger kids can dig in the sandbox, climb on the toddler-sized playground or shimmy across the balancing ropes. Big Walnut Park inside the neighborhood also has a playground. Lacey Woods Park, in the neighborhood over, has more sports fields, playgrounds, nature trails and picnic areas. "Lacey Woods Park is really big. You'll see little kids trying to kick a ball around, but they have the basketball park, so you have older kids there too," Twigg says. About 1.5 miles north of Tara-Leeway Heights is the Washington Golf & Country Club, a private golf course established in 1894 called the "Club of Presidents."Westover Farmers Market and more events nearby
Tara-Leeway Heights is just half a mile from the Westover Library, which hosts the weekly Westover Farmers Market in its plaza. Locals gather on Sunday mornings to find local fruit and vegetables, handmade bread and pasta, and blooming flowers. Westover Library also hosts kid and adult programming, including story times, movie nights, craft sessions and book clubs. The Greater Westover area, including Tara-Leeway Heights, hosts Westover Day at Cardinal Elementary. Families roam around the lawn, listening to live music, playing games, and checking out the ice cream truck.Walk to restaurants in Westover Village
Nearby Westover Village, a small shopping and dining district, is within walking distance of Tara-Leeway Heights. Residents can pick up prepared foods and Italian groceries at The Italian Store. Twigg recommends the sandwiches at Lost Dog Cafe, a relaxed American food spot with colorful murals of dogs along the walls and bar. For groceries, there's a Harris Teeter and Safeway just north of Langston Boulevard. In Westover Village, locals can pick up home goods at Ayers Variety & Hardware, a locally owned mainstay that has been around for over 70 years. The Ballston area is also less than 2 miles southeast of Tara-Leeway Heights and has a selection of bars and restaurants along Wilson Boulevard.Walk, bike or take a bus to the Metro
There is no Metro station in the Tara-Leeway Heights neighborhood, but residents are about 1.5 miles northeast of the East Falls Church Metro station and 2 miles northwest of the Ballston Metro station. Both stations are on the Orange Line and take riders into downtown Washington, D.C., about 10 miles east. Residents can park and ride at the East Falls Church station or, alternatively, take the 55 Bus on Langston Boulevard, bike or walk. "At the East Falls Church Metro, you can lock your bike, and it's easier to get to than the Ballston Metro," Twigg says. "Some people will walk to the station in the morning or afternoon and get the bus back, so they don't have to walk both ways." Drivers can also get to D.C. on Interstate 66. Tara-Leeway Heights is 7 miles west of the Pentagon, 8 miles west of Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport and just west of the Virginia Hospital Center. The neighborhood's CAP Index score is a 2, indicating a crime risk lower than the national average of 4.
