Woodmont
Hiking around Woodmont
The largest of Woodmont’s parks, Fort C.F. Smith Park is covered by the remains of a Civil War fort and the estate of a Victorian mansion. Parkgoers can take a half-mile hike through the fort’s earthworks or stroll through the mansion’s garden, featuring plant species from around the world. Meanwhile, Windy Run Park features a nearly mile-long trail hikers can use to connect with the Potomac Heritage National Scenic Trail; the latter trail guides pedestrians and cyclists along 830 miles of riverfront between Pennsylvania and Virginia. Residents can walk along the Potomac River, but the nearest place to put a boat in the water is 8 miles away at Gravelly Point. Next to Windy Run Park, Woodmont Park has a basketball court and playground, though the latter is closed in 2024 for renovations. The YMCA Arlington Woodmont Gymnastics Center offers classes for children between 4 and 16 years of age.Shops and restaurants in Lyon Village, Clarendon Boulevard
Residents can’t walk to businesses in the neighborhood, but they can use the Custis Trail to stroll or bike to Lyon Village shopping center less than half a mile outside Woodmont. Within Lyon Village, The Italian Store carries wine, cheese and sub sandwiches while Big Wheel Bikes makes repairs and sells cyclists new rides. The shopping center lacks a supermarket, but there’s a Safeway about half a mile south of Woodmont. Locals can browse more than a dozen restaurants and cafes a mile away along Clarendon Boulevard or visit the shops and eateries across the river in historic Georgetown. “Many people use the travel time to or from D.C. as criteria for purchasing a home, and from here, you can be in Georgetown in five minutes,” Close says. Woodmont is next to Cherrydale United Methodist Church, a congregation that began meeting in 1899.Large homes in a green setting
A visitor may assume Woodmont dates to the 19th century since many homes show off Victorian features including towers, bay windows and spindled front porches. In reality these homes were built in the 2000s but mimic the architectural style of the late 1800s. Colonial Revivals, ranch homes and sleek modernist designs line the streets too. While the styles vary, the floor plans are consistently spacious; the average home size is nearly 3,500 square feet, larger than the national average of 1,900. Some houses sit far back from the streets on wide lots. Split-rail fences, walls of ivy and full gardens further buffer houses from neighbors and roads. Homes are likely priced between $1 million and $2 million. Houses sell in an average of four days, so buyers can expect a competitive market in Woodmont.STEAM program at Taylor Elementary School
Public school students are zoned to the highly rated Arlington Public Schools district, which gets an A-plus from Niche. Kids can start at A-rated Taylor Elementary School, which operates a STEAM department that leads projects and crafts focused on science, technology, engineering art and math. The local middle and high school are graded even higher, as Dorothy Hamm Middle School and Yorktown High School both receive A-plus. Woodmont is less than a mile from St. Agnes Catholic School and Primrose School of Arlington, a private preschool.Music by the Metro concerts nearby
Clarendon Boulevard, also known as the Clarendon corridor, is not only packed with restaurants and stores, but it frequently hosts events. Woodmont residents can venture a mile outside their neighborhood to catch free concerts during May’s Music by the Metro series or peruse vendors selling crafts and local wine during Clarendon Day in September.Crossing the Potomac into Washington
George Washington Memorial Parkway extends past the north side of Woodmont, with Spout Run Parkway to the east. Residents can use both to drive to Washington, reaching Georgetown in less than 3 miles and arriving downtown in less than 5. Woodmont is just over a mile from the Clarendon station, the closest Metro stop. While the station has bike racks, there’s no parking.
