The city of Arnold embodies an easygoing lifestyle with its riverside parks and a business district of casual eateries, providing urban convenience just 30 miles northeast of Pittsburgh. Located on the shore of the Allegheny River, the small Pennsylvania city’s neat rows of residential streets offer a dense suburban feel.
A few local eateries offer a casual and laidback vibe while serving up favorite dishes. Football fans watch a Steelers game at the dim bar of Augie’s Sports Pub while enjoying wings and cheese fries, while New York-style pies are made to order at family-owned P&M Pizza. Fazio’s Pizza & Italian Food is a mom-and-pop deli with a counter serving pepperoni rolls and hoagies. Residents stock up on groceries at the Aldi and Giant Eagle Supermarket on Route 366 and head across the river to the Galleria at Pittsburgh Mills for a day of shopping at names like Macy’s and Dick’s Sporting Goods – just 15 minutes away.
Residences cluster along the walkable blocks here, resulting in small yards and closely set properties. The longstanding architecture is similar to that of neighboring communities: "Arnold is very much the same as New Kensington as far as housing is concerned,” says Janet Ryan, Realtor at Century 21 American Heritage. “It's an older community with houses from over 50 years ago.” Bungalows, Four Squares, and cottages are the most popular single-family home styles, many with either detached garages or street parking. The median home value here is $64,500 – compared to nearby New Kensington’s median of $106,500 – with prices ranging from $57,000 to $145,000. Arnold receives a crime score of 4 out of a possible 10, according to the CAP Index. This score is comparable to the US national average.
As the name implies, Riverside Park hugs the Allegheny River along the west side of the city. A paved pathway snakes through the grassy park, providing a scenic place to take a stroll amidst the tree-covered hills, while plenty of benches offer a seat to enjoy the view. Nearby, Roosevelt Park features a playground and swing set area for children, and a pavilion for picnics on a warm day. Just outside the city, parks like Memorial Park and Falcon Park feature additional playgrounds and walking paths, as well as basketball courts and tennis courts. At the adjacent Pittsburgh Ice Arena, kids and adults alike learn to ice skate, play hockey, and figure skate.
At the beginning of June, Roosevelt Park comes alive with tunes as the Rockin’ Roosevelt Festival brings a lineup of local and regional bands for a day of music. The benefit concert raises funds to improve Roosevelt Park, and the event is complete with food vendors and a raffle with prizes.
Students in Arnold attend the New Kensington-Arnold School District. “Arnold shares the same school district with New Kensington,” Ryan says. The district boasts recent renovations to its facilities, from a track and field to a 1,200-seat auditorium with new lighting and sound systems. Kids may start their academic journey at H.D. Berkey School for first and second grade, which earns a C-plus overall score from Niche. Third through sixth graders attend Roy A. Hunt Elementary School before advancing to Valley Junior-Senior High School. Both schools receive a C-minus grade.
Though they rely mostly on cars for transportation, residents of Arnold benefit from easy access to Pennsylvania Route 366 and Route 28, which connect them to downtown Pittsburgh within 30 minutes. Bus stops scattered around the city are serviced by the Westmoreland Transit Authority, and routes run through neighboring communities like New Kensington and Creighton. For further travel, the Pittsburgh International Airport is 40 miles away via Route 28.
