Lakeside community with peaceful residences

On the banks of its namesake lake, Asbury Lake's quiet residences and waterfront houses offer a relaxed place to call home. The community feels secluded, but it's just 20 miles from the coast and 35 miles from downtown, so access to attractions and major employers is still convenient. "It's got such a hometown feeling," says Lisa Sweat, a Realtor with Florida Homes Realty and Mortgage and lifelong area resident. "This is a family-friendly neighborhood where everybody looks out for each other, and nobody worries about anything. I raised my daughters here, and I never once felt like I had to worry about them going off by themselves and playing outside." In addition to the hometown feel of the area, there is new construction surrounding the neighborhood promoting the growth of the community.

A variety of home styles in Asbury Lake

Homes here vary from traditional mid-century, ranch-style homes to lakeside log cabins and brand-new builds. The variety of architecture and prices are part of what Sweat says makes the neighborhood so desirable. "Everybody likes driving through here just to look at the array of homes," she says. "The older section has homes built in the '70s and '80s with bigger lots, so neighbors aren't right on top of each other." Many of these older homes are set right on Lake Asbury and range from $550,000 to $800,000, depending on the lot size and amount of water frontage. There are also new traditional and contemporary subdivisions in the neighborhood's eastern reaches, several of which are gated. Prices here often range from $300,000 to $500,000.

Close Ronnie Van Zant Park

The community surrounds Lake Asbury, where residents can launch small boats and kayaks off the ramp on Lake Asbury Drive. The Black Creek Ravines Conservation Area sits on the neighborhood's edge, encompassing nearly 1,000 acres of wetlands and woodlands. About 3 miles of this natural area run directly along Black Creek, where canoeing and kayaking are popular. Visitors can fish, hike, bike or go horseback riding here, and several designated camping areas exist. The scenic overlook is a popular spot for a bird's-eye perspective of the creek 30 feet below. Also in the neighborhood, Ronnie Van Zant Memorial Park, named after the late Lynyrd Skynyrd vocalist, spans over 90 acres. The park offers several playgrounds, athletic fields, a zipline, a fitness course and a 36-hole disc golf course. For more lowkey activities, visitors can fish at the park's pond or go for a walk along its trails.

Commuting from Jacksonville

While the neighborhood is about 35 miles from downtown Jacksonville, making it car-dependent, Sweat notes that many residents travel locally in classic Florida style. "Asbury Lake is a golf cart community," Sweat says. "You'll obviously still see cars passing by, but most people just rely on their golf carts instead. You'll often even see people riding horses right on the road." There are also JTA bus stops along Blanding Boulevard. The closest hospital is Ascension St. Vincent's Clay County.
