Rural Rhode Island living
When some people think of Rhode Island, they might assume the state to have a dense population due to its size. In the Ashley-Bradford neighborhood, however, farms and forests blanket the rural landscape. Brooks and ponds dot the community, offering opportunities for fishing or reflection. On average, the community's homes are some of the least expensive in Rhode Island, which enables some buyers who are priced out of larger cities to find homes. "You can feel like you're living in this historic and quiet rural town, but with how centrally located it is, you can be almost anywhere you need to be in 20 minutes or less, says Barrett Gross, a local agent with Re/Max Flagship who has over 30 years of experience working in the area. "Even downtown Providence is around a 40-mile commute, and plenty of people make the drive every day for work."
Exploring the outdoors at Grills Preserve
Ashaway Free Library, which originally opened in 1871, is not only a resource for book lovers but also a community gathering spot. The library hosts weekly story times and themed lectures. Kids can run around on the wooden playset, toss a football or shoot some hoops at Crandall Field. Grills Preserve is a 550-acre wilderness area along the Pawcatuck River used by hikers, hunters and fishermen. There are more than 6 miles of trails, which pass wetlands and brooks. "Many people here love outdoor activities, whether hunting, fishing, mountain biking or hiking," Gross says. "The land and parks around here will more than satisfy any nature lover."
Chariho district schools
Public schools here are ranked comfortably in the top half of schools in the state. Students in Ashley-Bradford are served by the Chariho Regional School District, starting with Niche A-minus-rated Ashaway Elementary School. Next, neighborhood kids may attend Chariho Regional Middle and High Schools, earning a B-plus and B rating from Niche, respectively.
A mix of old and new housing
Housing styles here vary from smaller duplexes once occupied by mill workers to two to three-bedroom ranch-style homes, Cape Cods, and even ornate Queen Anne mansions. Plenty of original Colonial and Colonial Revival-style houses dot the landscape too, giving this rural area a sense of individuality and culture. Most three to five-bedroom homes in Ashley-Bradford range between $250,000 and $650,000. "It's a mix of old and new," Gross says.
Traveling to New London or Providence
Ashley-Bradford is bordered by Interstate 95 to the north, the Connecticut border to the west, and the scenic Pawcatuck River to the south. Houses are sparsely scattered through the forests and fields of the region, but I-95 is only a couple of minutes away, providing residents access to the main artery of the whole eastern seaboard. Mystic, New London and Norwich, Connecticut, are all within a 20 or 30-mile drive. Many residents head less than 10 miles up to Hope Valley for groceries at Stop & Shop, as well as pharmacies and restaurants. This rural community's secluded feel and proximity to major cities and beaches offer Ashley-Bradford residents the best of worlds.
Beaches and shopping within a 10-mile drive
Westerly is the closest sizable population center to Ashley-Bradford and where residents can go for groceries, shopping, or a vibrant night on the town. Just beyond Westerly lies the Atlantic Ocean, less than 10 miles from Ashaway. This area includes East Beach, Misquamicut State Beach, and Atlantic Beach, with parking lots and public access points. There is a Walmart less than 8 miles south of Ashley-Bradford for all supermarket needs, but many mom-and-pop groceries still dot the area around Westerly. Ritacco's Market offers authentic Italian meats, pastas and other goods, and Reale's Grocery has been a community staple for more than 100 years — both markets serve grinders.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
