Suburban living along the Blue Ridge Parkway
Suburban living comes with mountain views and easy access to nature in East Asheville. Cradled between the Interstate 240/I-40 belt loop and the Blue Ridge Parkway in Western North Carolina, East Asheville is a large neighborhood with residential pockets and wooded, hilly roads. It sits just 4 miles from Downtown Asheville, making for an easy commute. East Asheville is bisected by the Swannanoa River with commercial spaces to the south, green space throughout and a golf course sitting in the heart of the neighborhood. Jody Whitehurst, a Realtor with Town Mountain Realty who has lived in Asheville for 23 years, says it draws buyers to the area regardless of their interest in the sport. “Many homes have scenic views of the golf course, and it’s low-key, so people who live in the neighborhood enjoy walking on the golf cart trails after hours,” Whitehurst says. Buyers will find a blend of styles, from Craftsman to split-level, for between $300,000 to over $750,000.
East Asheville is located 4 miles east of Downtown Asheville.
The Blue Ridge Parkway is a National Parkway constructed in 1936.

A home among the trees in Western North Carolina
Mature Pine, Red Maple and Sweetgum trees shade many of the homes here, on lots of varying elevations along winding, two-lane roads. Despite a dearth of sidewalks, traffic is slow enough for people to walk along the edges. Most single-family homes are brick ranch-styles and split-levels built in the 1960s with attached garages or carports. There are also newer, earth-toned Craftsman homes, townhouses and the occasional log cabin. Most homes contain roughly 1,400 square feet, with three bedrooms. They tend not to stay on the market long. “The price point in East Asheville can be a tad lower than areas that are more central, north, or west of Downtown Asheville,” says Whitehurst. The median single-family home price is $437,000, but homes can go for as low as $300,000 or up to $750,000.

East Asheville students can begin their educational journey in Buncombe County Schools at the tree-canopied campus of Charles C. Bell Elementary, which gets a B-plus grade from Niche. Students can move on to A.C. Reynolds Middle School, 5 miles south on the other side of Route 74. The school, also rated B-plus, participates in the annual Battle of the Books, a competition where students read select books and test their knowledge in quiz-bowl-style tournaments. Next, students can head to the A-minus-rated A.C. Reynolds High School. It’s ranked the seventh-best high school for athletes in North Carolina, and football games are a favorite community event.

Exercise, relax or connect with wildlife at Asheville Recreation Park
Residents of East Asheville can step out their back door directly into nature. But a short drive can connect them to the Blue Ridge Parkway and all of its hiking paths, bike trails and other green places. Meanwhile, Asheville Recreation Park is a sprawling complex tucked along the banks of the Swannanoa. Visitors can hold soccer matches under the stars, fish off the pier, or go for a dip in the pool mere steps from the river. The park is also home to the Western North Carolina Nature Center, which Whitehurst says is “like a little mountain zoo,” showcasing local wildlife like American Red Wolves, Black Bears and River Otters. Its latest addition is a Red Panda Exhibit.
Living in East Asheville you will see a variety of wildlife.

Convenient shopping, eclectic food options and Asheville brewing history
Grocery stores are clustered around I-240, like Whole Foods Market or the locally-owned Hopey & Co. Across South Tunnel Road, the indoor Asheville Mall has dozens of stores and casual dining options. For a more refined meal, locals head to spots like Copper Crown. It has an eclectic, ever-changing menu with a wide range of flavors from New Orleans to Italy. Diners can eat on the covered patio or sit in the chic dining room accented with colorful wood paneling. While Downtown Asheville is known for its many craft breweries, East Asheville is home to the city’s first. Highland Brewing Company, founded in 1994 in a downtown basement, now operates a big brewpub in a former movie studio. It remains family-owned, and visitors can grab a pint, play volleyball or disc golf, and unwind to live music.
