Access to the outdoors and a welcoming atmosphere intersect in Ashford
Ashford’s history dates back to its 1714 incorporation as a town centered around agriculture. Over the next three centuries, it transitioned into a residential community while still retaining plenty of open space in what is known as northern Connecticut's "Quiet Corner." “It’s a pretty friendly town,” says Suzanne Staubach, owner of Willow Tree Poetry and resident since 1983. “There are people living here who have been on family land that’s existed since before the country was even formed.” Residents gather at locally owned restaurants and annual events and spend time outdoors across hiking trails and recreational facilities close to home.

Short trips lead to Ashford Memorial Park, hiking trails, summer camp and more
Ashford’s location offers plenty of opportunities to spend time outdoors. “We have some of the Yale-Meyers Forest in Ashford, which is full of wildlife and dense forest,” Staubach says. Residents can explore a section of the forest along Nipmuck Trail Loop, one of many local hiking destinations. Ashford Memorial Park features a playground, athletic courts and fields, and open space for gatherings. When school's out, children can attend scout and cub scout summer camps at June Norcross Webster Scout Reservation. Earl W. Smith Senior Center on Tremko Lane hosts various indoor activities, from Wii bowling to tai chi classes and bingo nights.

Architectural styles vary across town, and so does acreage
Narrow residential avenues just wide enough for two vehicles to pass one another flank the main roads of Ashford. High-reaching forest canopies shield homes from view. These properties come in various architectural styles, from ranch and split-levels to New Traditional styles, with build dates from the early 18th century to the present. Septic and well-water systems are common, as are 2-acre-plus lots providing enough space for backyard gardens and small farms. Brooks and streams flow throughout the area, functioning as tributaries for residential ponds and lakes, where homes cluster closer together. Homebuyers can expect a price range between $200,000 and $600,000. However, larger homes on 10 or more acres can sell for just under $900,000.

Residents dine along U.S. Route 44 and shop in Killingly
Ashford Dairy Bar on U.S. Route 44 is the place to get a burger and a soft-serve cone. “It’s been around for about 60 years and is very popular during summer,” Staubach says. Midway Restaurant and & Pizza and The Wooden Spoon, a laid-back breakfast spot, are also along the stretch. Ashford Farmers Market offers fresh produce and handmade goods every Sunday morning at Pompey Hollow Park during its outdoor season and within Knowlton Memorial Hall during the winter and early spring. Developments in Killingly, 14 miles east, offer Stop & Shop and Aldi, including several large retailers like Target and T.J. Maxx.
